Sweet Justice? Guy was just sitting there at a traffic light and some criminal does a cowardly drive by. How can this be construed as self defense?

On 26 December 1776, the British were mostly just passed out from celebrating Christmas when Washington's troops attacked them at Trenton.

And what makes you think that was ok?

One of my biggest problems with the guy is he's a nationalist market anarchist. It seems he believes that any military protecting the United States would protect the entire United States. He also comes across as thinking that any military conflict would be two sided. Our force versus their force. I would expect our side, with the many police and insurance companies, would manage to raise a large number of separate forces with a common market goal. Every company will want credit for sending off the invaders though, so they will compete with each other to see who best does it.

Do you have any idea how terrible that sounds?

If the insurance company I have manages to fund the defense and save our area, wouldn't the others in my area be "free riders?" Not necessarily, I bet many of them would be impressed enough to switch their company to this new one. And given the failure on part of the other businesses, the customers not part of mine will be paid hefty sums of money by their companies. So the "free rider problem" hardly even exists.

Why? Why would anyone want to pay for a "defence company"when they will get the benefit of the defence company anyway?

Whose troops are going to enforce it?

If it came down to that, Greece couldn't, and for their own good, wouldn't go up against a multinational Euro-force.

No doubt, I meant in terms of a more general application.

I don't 100% see what you mean. Define the problem, and tell me what you see as the solution in the context of a denationalization plan.

When the balance of power isn't a clear cut as that between Germany/France and Greece. Say if France owed Germany a shit ton.

Well Germany has already marched on France twice.  Don't think they are willing to do it a 3rd time.

France has nuclear weapons.

Even if they didn't they'd put up enough of a fight to make it uneconomic.

Or just reverse the participants. The point stands.

You wouldn't say "voting is for suckers" if Ron Paul were ahead in the polls.

I would.

Side note:

I was amused to see on the wiki an "articulate" reference from a newsweek article.

Not being an American I was never quite sure how much of that meme was a joke, how much whining, and how much a genuine linguistic trend when referring to prominent non sporting/musical blacks.

Unless of course he is particularly articulate.

Good. I had a hard time believing you would go through all that trouble to get a religious gal and then be surprised when she had issues with porn.

This.

Parking ticket. Damn. I'm boring.

Scenario:

Person A: How can we best help black people?

Ron Paul: something, something, something, but what we really need to do is get them off welfare.

Otherwise I'm with Shaw.

He posted that info in response to the claim that Paul was a "nice guy" not in response to the idea that he'd be a better president than the others.

General / Re: Sweatshop labor, compatible with liberty?
« on: April 15, 2011, 02:35:28 AM »
If we're talking about modern sweatshops which are enforced by state law and treaty (where local govts basically don't allow laborers to unionize or collectively bargain), then yes it's bad for liberty. Like or not, if the market forces on the price of labor go one way only (where the employer gets to set a price, but the employee has no right to set his/her), then it's not a free market.

There are a lot more pro-union laws in the US than anti union laws. Besides, saying, "fuck you, I'm out." is negotiating your price. Now, you may not be in a good position to quit, but consequences are part of any choice or freedom.

How did this conversation get to be about the US?

I've got no idea what the situation is in NH, but in some places there's a pretty good chance you'd get yourself in major trouble for not outing someone in that situation. I'd certainly get legal advice in that situation. And I sure wouldn't be risking myself for them.
