This should be interesting... Right?!

For all the intellectual folks out there that are smarter and or more educated than me, the bible is the inerrant Word of God.

General / Romans 13 (part 2)
« on: June 02, 2011, 08:02:34 AM »
So, I started a thread in the general section of the message board, but got responses that were not answering my question.  Now I am starting this thread so I can weed out any responses that are not related directly to the answer, so we can stay on topic.

I need help with Romans 13 from the Christian bible.  I don't think translation matters, but it could.  I am trying to reconcile my liberty loving anti government ways with Romans 13.  I can't be the only one who feels this way.  Or am I?

Romans 13
New International Version (NIV)
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

This is a question meant for those who believe the bible to be the inerrant word of God.  I am not sure how many of those types are in the freedom/liberty scene, but if you are out there, I need some help.  I cannot seem to reconcile Romans 13 and my the bad feelings I have for government.  I believe that government is evil, yet Romans 13 says to obey the evil.  I don't get it.

If you have "figured this out", help me please.
