Tonight, I am drinking coffee, because I'm working the midnight shift.
I've been experimenting with energy drinks this past week, to find out if any of them are any good. So far, the "five-hour energy drink" didn't last all of five minutes that I could tell. Rock Star was a little better, but was more of a one-hit wonder that was really no better than a tall Starbucks. Tonight, I'll be trying some over priced concoction called "Monster." Really, I think all of them are based on the placebo effect. That, and caffeine.
Mike - Based on many years of midnight shift, I would suggest avoiding the so-called energy drinks. They're loaded with sugar, and they wreak havoc on your innards. Very acidic concoctions, just all-around terrible drinks.
Even the 5-hour energy doesn't work to reverse the sleep-cycle. The only time I've found they helped is when I'm in a normal pattern and took one in the late-morning doldrums, they kinda rejuvenate you. But they don't help at all when its 2am and you're tired for real.
For all-nighters, I would get some over-the-counter "uppers" from the corner store. They usually sell 'em right by the cash register so the kids don't steal 'em. They usually have whatever legal version of Ephedrine is allowable by law (read the back, they're for truckers and late-shifters). They'll be called Sta-Awake or Max Alert, and come in capsules, 4 to a pack for about 2 bucks. The packaging is funny because they look exactly like Black Beauties or Yellowjackets, which I'm sure you've seen.
You only need one capsule, and you'll feel like you had two strong cups of coffee, but it doesn't wear off as fast. You can usually get a good four hours out of them. If you expect to get to sleep around 7am, you should take them no later than midnight because the residuals could keep you a little twitchy when you're trying to sleep.
I've used them many times, I used to keep a pack in my briefcase. 4 caps would last me about a year - so its not like I was in the habit of taking one every night religiously. There are nights when you are simply unable to stay awake.
