There is a popular mis-belief that the free market is an unplanned economy. This is untrue. In fact, a free economy is MORE planned than is one directed from a central planner. This is because economies are very complex things, requiring millions of decisions at every level every single day, most of which must be made immediately to do any good. Any central planning office must have a very large staff to get this done. However, even with a huge staff, most of the decisions will be slow and cumbersome.
The market gets around this by using a neat trick: it co-opts everyone as a planner. Each person does their own economic planning. Some make poor decision, and when they do, they suffer. But for the most part, people make what appears the right decision, and do so in time for that decision to actually make sense. The result is that, overall, the economy thrives.
