An Anonymous Exchange System Based on Tor
« on: July 31, 2006, 11:45:35 PM »

I just recently refound and slightly edited a "white paper" I wrote a few months ago about creating an anonymous physical goods exchange network, based on the concept of Tor. It can be found at http://tinyurl.com/rswue (PDF Format). Ideally, someone should get a group together and try this out in real life to make sure it works/trouble shoot+fix problems.

Didn't the Knights Templar use something like this for their banking system? I saw this on a History Channel show, where you gave them 10 bucks or whatever in France, then you went on your pilgrimage, and in Jerusalem, you showed them an encoded piece of paper to get your money back. You could also just get part of it, or deposit more, and they would make encoded markings on the paper so it wall all be jake when you got back to France and settled your account.

You might be right about that. There's also the hawala system that's been used in the middle east for hundreds of years. It is similar. On a similar note, I just set up my own anonymous web server via Tor at http://qocmzkmpvssifhni.onion/. So far, it only has a few files just thrown in a directory, but please try to access it and let me know if it works. It does locally, but I'd like to make sure that it can be accessed from the outside. I developed a crude but (I hope) effective semi secure back-up method one could use to mirror such important documents in the event that your computer and physical backups get lost or stolen by thieves and/or law enforcement (one and the same some would argue).

To get to bushwacker's site, make sure that your browser is actually configured to use Tor. I have not yet found anything that will direct only onion domains through the network, so you will probably have to temporarily run everything through Tor. To see if you can access other hidden sites, try http://6sxoyfb3h2nvok2d.onion/ (a hidden Wiki hosted by the Tor project itself).

<edit>Yes, one could use a separate browser or profile... but I'm *really* lazy :)</edit>

Also note that it's kind of slow, so let it load for a few seconds (or 10). I talked to the developers and they said that hidden services capabilities need a lot of work still.
