Why people support closed borders
« on: July 15, 2011, 09:10:04 PM »

FTL hosts recognize that a lot of new comers to freedom come from the 'right' side of the political spectrum. If one starts on the right they will often be Fox News watchers. The right presents the immigration issue as one of feeding the Democrat Party and adding to its rank of voters. They know that Democrats support welfare programs and that it ads to the debt. Until they stop seeing freedom as a right/left issue they will continue to support closed borders. So, IMO, people often want a crack down on "illegals" because they don't support welfare. As to the herpes, TB and other crazy arguments...I have no explanation for that and have yet to run into anyone who make those claims.

So end welfare. Oh wait, they're on welfare. They want closed borders so fewer new people can get some of the money they stole. Thats why we only let rich people, people with jobs, or people with other positive attributes arrive legally.

If you're speaking of immigrants from Mexico & South America, my guess is that most will end up supporting Democrats. It's kind of a no-brainer.. if I'd had to go through the trouble of sneaking myself & my family across borders to end up in America, once here my efforts are going to continue to be focused on my own self interest, not freedom & liberty.

I'm also guessing that most "illegals" don't vote. But through various social support networks they do eventually find a voice in politics, probably always on the left, which ingratiates the two groups. Political pandering pays off.

There doesn't seem to be any incentive at all for an illegal immigrant to come to America and then vote Republican or even for someone like Ron Paul.

The idea of open borders leading to a revival of Liberty is full of childlike innocence, as in a kid imagining some day he'll be a costumed superhero who saves a kitty from a burning building and the whole town comes together to cheer the hero and give the kitty some milk.

I wonder how enthusiastic the open borders crowd would be if it were millions of undocumented pro-government conservative Christian Canadians that were hopping across the border.

Dunno... "negative" depends on your perspective. I'm much more interested in whether or not I've said something that's incorrect.

Sounds like there's very little difference between that Mexican and myself, so that scenario works perfectly for me. Unfortunately, there's a big difference between me and most people, in most scenarios. In this case I think these differences also include the Mexican fellow you mentioned.

Consider the pitch for the Free State, the one that targets "like-minded individuals". We (probably) agree that this element is crucial to make progress and getting things started on a small scale in one small locale. So logically, it would require even more like-minded people to change the entire country. I haven't seen or heard of any evidence that suggests open borders will result in more liberty and less politics & regulations - only the opposite. Again though, I'm looking for truth, not to just be "right" so if you have info, spill it.

And it's true, I have no idea which Mexican will vote which way. I also have no idea which teenager may or may not be having sex, so I go with the law of averages which is pretty accurate.

Mexicans and other immigrants have rallies where they gather together on immigration and such and then vote.

If it's these big organizations and the votes they promise to politicians you're worried about you should look to the Christians for something to fear.  They're already here and they are 51% all by themselves.  Christians are way scarier than watermelon farmers.
