In anything in life, 20% do all of the work, while 80% sit on their ass.  This is called the 80/20 rule.

In the case of web-forums, 20% (or less) do all the posting, the other 80% "lurk".

Also, posts generate posts, so the fact that you are here posting, entices others to post, enticing others to join, and helps grow this BBS.

With patience and participation, this BBS could be hopping.

I didn't know how long this board's been around, but I have a number of topics I think would be interesting to add, if people are interested in actually discussing something.  I will give it a shot.  (I am constantly hitting the wrong key tonite since I spilled coffee on my keyboard today and have to use the one that came with my brand new computer.  So I'm not up to speed until I go get another 20 year old dusty clicky keyboard from our surplus store.)

(What the heck is the Windows key for anyway?)

You fucking ignoramus.  I CAN'T delete you from this message board.  I meant deleting you from the face of the planet, anyhow.  Don't try and insult me here to look cool like everybody else, because you're not funny.  At least make it moderately humorous if you're going to insult someone.  Once again, this forum is not a place in which to hurdle personal insults, and if you can't take a fucking joke, don't post.  Especially three times in a row.  At the top of your post, there is a button where you can EDIT your post, in case you forgot to include something the first time, or find an error that bugs you.  And just so you know, the only times I have even USED the privilage of moderator on this forum is to go through and make someone's post easier to read by punctuating it or correcting a spelling error or two.  And of course, to delete Dorey's bump threads, but that was by order of Ian.  I don't see that as a crime until Ian tells me differently.  And now, for my mudslinging of the night.  Shut your Goddamned mouth before someone punches you in the teeth.

Even though Lindsey already made it clear, I will re-iterate:

Lindsey was chosen as moderator because she was able to solve a little problem we had earlier with a few posters.

She has very specific instructions as to what she can and can't do.

She will not delete a post.  (Unless it is an unnecessary bump.)

She can not delete users.

She will edit posts with extra carriage returns. (one of the problems we had that created the need for a moderator.)

To answer your question, Alice, since May 2003.

I considered this in the genesis of the forum.  I decided that if they don't want to join, screw em.  I'm not going to sell their info or violate their privacy.

Requiring registration to even read the forums contributes to more signups from those who would normally lurk anonymously.

Generally I bypass forums which require registration. Registration is a pain in the ass, so there better be something worth registering for. If they can't sample the forum...

Interesting points.  As you know, I joined only a couple (?) of months ago, because I happened to listen to the show a few times and  wanted to tell you all a Thing Or Two.    If I want to jump into a forum, I don't hesitate to sign in.  

I  still do, however, avoid websites that make you "register" just read one of their articles you happened to link to.  

I wonder why people would register to go to a forum and then never post anything.  When I posted this topic, "this forum kinda sucks right now,"  I was seeing almost no activity here, except to have someone responding to call me dirty names every time I posted something.

So I take it back now, I don't think it sucks or I wouldn't still be come here.

I think having to register just to look is a good thing, and that it lessens the number of people who just come in here to vomit their crap at other people because they have nothing intelligent to say about anything.  There's going to be a LITTLE of that everywhere you go.

On almost every BBS I run I require registration for all but ONE of the forums...

One area of the boards remains an open area for all to read, registered or not, and the rest are closed for all but registered members...

Just an idea... you could make one forum open. Hell you COULD even make one that doesn't require registration to POST...

These settings aren't board-wide.

I had typed in a long response, then I got sidetracked by something. When I submit my reply it wants me to log in again and I lost the response I had typed.

Acceptance is a fuzzy calculation.  You have to decide if their issues, habits, quirks, and behaviors outweigh their core.  Maybe their core is fucked, and none of the rest matters.  Maybe their core is decent, and their surrounding details are minor.  Maybe their core is very good, but the rest of their shit is overwhelming.  

In this case, I think a lot of issues are pushing into the red zone, and it triggers the circuit breakers on most peoples calculations.  Their decisions are made for them, based on the process of defensive mechanisms and fight-or-flight.  The person exhibits traits that are unattractive, and they obscure or wholly negate the positive attributes of the person.

There may be little or no IRL danger to speak of, but the dynamics here are different.  Much of the goal here is simple enjoyment, which the subconscious views as "life" in the online environment.  Threat to enjoyment is perceived as a threat to "life", and therefore the defensive mechanisms become valid, and avoidance is the first line of defense.

There's some pretty good stuff in the annals of this forum.  A lot of anals too, actually, which is not quite as good.
