I would like you guys to stop using the fascist southern voice. I sound like that and I'm not a fascist.

The need to use different voices to differentiate character imitations on radio will not go away.  So the question is - what kind of an accent should a character to be recognized as a "fascist" in your opinion have, that isn't southern, and is different enough from I&M's regular speaking voices, and different enough from any other character voices that they do, but is still accessible to their vocal chords?  And, why do you think the people who share that accent are any more "fascist" than anyone else?

I was initially turned off by Ian's use of the stereotypical southern voice when I first started listening to the show, but I have found it quite entertaining recently. I really got a kick out of Mark trying to pull off the voice during the raw milk segment a couple days ago... I love you man but it needs more practice :)

I believe my recent acceptance has to do with FTL's "useage" of the stereotype as opposed to "OVER-useage" I was perceiving when I first started listening...

...or maybe FTL has turned me in to an asshole and that is why I have found it funny as of late.

More than fascist, I think I'd call it Ian's "Unintelligent Southern Voice," since speaking with a Southern accent is probably strongly negatively correlated with IQ.

Maybe all unintelligent characters vocalized by the hosts of FTL should sound like a dumb blonde  (damn, YouTube embedding still broke).

Seriously, women are hormonally predisposed to be dumber than men, and also more socialist / collectivist.

I have a scouse accent, which commonly gets used in UK comedy as a byword for thuggishness, stupidity, and a propensity to steal things.

I don't get offended by it, I can generally find it funny because its a shorthand to express certain cultural and personal values. Anytime its done right, its making fun of the stereotypes attached to the accent, not anyone who happens to have the accent.

Now you could argue that its a lazy way of getting those things across, which is probably right, but taking offense at it seems kind of pointless.

The only way I'd be offended by it, is if i thought my accent was an important part of who I was. Which it isn't. Its just an unimportant quirk caused by unintentional circumstances of birth.

If anyone finds the accent funny because they truly believe anyone with that accent is one way or another, then thats their retarded problem.

As has been mentioned, on radio its difficult to try and put across impersonation, i.e. that you are representing opinions other than your own, without making changes to your voice.

and redneck seems to be the most commonly accepted signifier.

How about a Brooklyn accent?

Only when quoting IRS, BATFE, FDA, FBI, etc etc etc, goons.

well pretty much every northern accent in the uk is either viewed as thuggish (geordie, glaswegian, scouse) or retarded/backwards (yorkshire, wollyback, boltonian)

UK accents seem to be blending into a (relatively) accentless homogeneous whole though.

I always laugh when UK or Irish folks say "Gun".  Sounds like "Goohn".  Last summer I was making money off Irish tourists by organizing tourbuses to take the under 21 Irish down to Tijuana and Rosarito for insane drinking and partying.  Hilarious when they found out I'm a gun owner.  "You actually own GOOHNZ?  WHY?"  Hahaha...  I still laugh just remembering how they would say it.

Southern Brits need to get over themselves and listen to some Elbow.

I know the accent, so I use it.  I'm pretty bad at holding other accents for any length of time.

Try not to take it personal, ya hear?   :)
