Stop being an asshole about prepositions
« on: May 25, 2010, 02:06:52 PM »

There is nothing grammatically wrong with the sentence "It doesn't matter where you come from," but for some reason, in the May 20 show, Ian decided to instead say "It doesn't matter whence you come" (after a great deal of fumbling). This weird aversion to ending a sentence with a preposition has been rampant in the show lately, and it's becoming grating.

You sound like an uneducated yet arrogant prick when you adjust your wording to some asinine, unnatural construction involving the word "whence" just to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition. IT IS NOT INCORRECT TO END A SENTENCE WITH A PREPOSITION.

See, for example:

If you want to be logical about language, then let's switch to the latest version of Lojban.

English, on the other hand, is a Frankenstein language of convenience - it has evolved, and will continue to evolve, through ad hoc modifications spreading on the basis of utility, with little or no regard for consistency, purity, beauty, accuracy, or anything else.

Lojban appears to be retarded.  Half of the syllables are skippy.  Words are not easily said and are full of skips and pauses and strange consonants strung together. Thankfully it will never catch on.

The only place to find freedom is in the dictionary, under "F".

It will take some getting used to, like any language, but it sounds pretty normal to me.  Consonant clusters are very efficient and are pretty easy given enough practice (unless you're Japanese) - the alternative would be weird tonal things done with vowels (tùæaors tǖaors tīeæors tèieors?) and that would be a lot more difficult.

I don't listen to it because I can't stand music.

How about Kelen? A language without verbs.

Seriously.

http://www.terjemar.net/kelen.php

There are serious speakers of Klingon, Na'vi, Quenya, or heck how about Esperanto?

Nihongo to hanashimasu.

This is a project I could get with.

Still, English I prefer.

se me olvidó

Literal translation: it (the thing I lost) has forgotten itself at me

Way to dodge responsibility, eh?

which word means 'it'?

Se  = it
me = to me/at me (indirect object form)
olvido = third-person past tense of "to forget"

"it forgot itself at me"
