Stephany. problem with "money bomb"
« on: September 26, 2011, 01:34:09 AM »

O'Bama  did a money "sweep" yesterday, he swept into cali and added millions to his "war chest", campaign fund. I can't think of a better term than money bomb, myself. maybe think of a water balloon, "money balloon"? I don't know. I can't find the news article now, that's what the headline said, "money sweep"

Clearly, It bugs her. A host should be allowed to interject her own personal feelings into dialogue. I can see WHY It bothers her, but IMO, it is not a big deal either way. We all get that Ron Paul is not going to bomb people. She seems slightly hyper-sensitive, but that's ok. I enjoy her input either way. It's not like she harps on the issue for hours. She simply mentioned her discomfort with the term, then moved on.

Once again, I agree, Elise.  In this case (unless it keeps coming up), I didn't think it was offensive for her to bring up the unfortunate use of "bomb."  It's the sort of thing worth mentioning (It's like one of the few things Ian harps on that I agree with--getting callers in the habit of not saying "we" when referring to the actions of the US Government.  I never think that should pass without comment, because "we" is a propaganda tool.)  As for a solution, I'd probably consider "money drive," though that sounds a lot like "pledge drive," which reminds me of the two weeks I can't stand to watch public television.  :)

It bugs me too, a bit, after she brought it up. but danged if I can come up with an alternative. Good thing I'm not a marketer! And the "we" thing, I always think about that after I just said "we". Sorry.

People seem to say "we" loosely in various contexts, most of which don't bug me.  It only bugs me when it's clearly not the case, as in people referring to their sports teams as "we" and especially people referring to what a government does as "we."  Unfortunately, I think those are two of the most common.
