Title: Shop Amazon, Help FTL!
Post by: FTL_Ian on February 09, 2006, 12:48:08 AM
Okay, look in the upper right corner of the BBS. See the Amazon search box?  You'll also find it on the main FTL site in the banner column.

Whenever you enter Amazon through that banner or http://amazon.freetalklive.com a percentage of your purchases will go to support FTL!

Many of you already shop at Amazon, so just make it a habit to enter through http://amazon.freetalklive.com !  Plus if you haven't ever shopped there, go look around, they sell almost everything, and their prices are quite competitive!!

INTERNATIONAL LISTENERS:

http://amazon.freetalklive.com should redirect you to your country's Amazon.  If the redirect is not working, you may use these:

United Kingdom - http://amazonUK.freetalklive.com
Canada - http://amazonCA.freetalklive.com
Germany - http://amazonDE.freetalklive.com
United States - http://amazonUS.freetalklive.com

Well I bought something the other night, but I don't remember how I got there.  I have a link on my toolbar, and there's no way I'll get used to coming here first and then going to Amazon because I'm here.

its not like you have to do it every time... just go and shop around and then before you buy go to the FTl site and search for your purchase... i also dont have the link on here, Viva Helios!!!

I don't spend much time fucking around before I buy something.  I know what I want and I buy it with one click, because that's just the way I am.  If I remember, I remember.  If I don't, then fuck it.

Ian should get his teeth done in platinum and diamond chips, and do a FTL rap video, holding big wads of cash.

If you sell the DVD on Amazon it would open a wormhole in space.
Title: Re: Shop Amazon, Help FTL!
Post by: EclecticBuddha on February 12, 2006, 02:50:45 PM
I would think that selling DVD's of all of the back episodes would rock some cash flow... even if you are going to make all of them available eventually people would still buy them for the simplicity... ooh, what if you sold the item on amazon and I searched for it through freetalklive.com???  talk about wormholes...

Not really.  FTL would probably end up making more money if you bought direct from them to being with ^-^

I'm such an Amazon whore.  I buy at least two or three things every month, usually more...so all I have to do is remember to get there from here.  I tried that "get money off with A9" thing, but I never remember to use it, because Google is my friend.
Title: Re: Shop Amazon, Help FTL!
Post by: sfliberty on February 14, 2006, 06:23:42 PM
Do you get money from transactions that were made after you click on the link there not just through the search box?  Becuase in that case, just put this link: Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/freetalklive-20) on your links bar (or whatever it's called), the thing below the address bar by dragging this link onto it.  Then, when you want to get something from Amazon, just click on that link and you'll be on the Amazon site through FTL.

Tell me if this is wrong becuase i'll change it and delete this post.

Title: shopped amazon but FTL did not get the credit
Post by: curious on February 16, 2006, 10:52:39 PM
I wrote Ian to let him know that I had placed an order but FTL did not get the credit.  I dont know if I had too many pages open on the computer, or if the books were already in my cart.  If you are going to order books and want FTL to get credit, then you should probably make sure that you start with an empty cart.  This is what I got back from Amazon.com, they were pretty quick with the response.  There has got to be some way to ensure that you do this correctly and that FTL gets the credit.

I have researched this order and found that it was not credited to
the Associates account.  I'm sorry, but this order cannot be
retroactively credited to the Associates account.

In order to ensure that the sponsoring site receives credit for your
order you will need to start your shopping session from the
sponsoring web site.  Anything you place in your shopping cart within
the 24 hours following your entry from the sponsoring web site will
be credited to that site if it is purchased within 90 days.  Credit
will not be given for items already in your cart from a previous
visit.

Please note that you will not receive a notice when an Associate has
been credited for your purchases.

Personally I am not in favor of going into debt but a credit card can be very useful and if someone is going to have one anyway...

But seriously - great promotion. I will be doing all of my (usually meager) purchases thru the site from now on.

Convince Amazon to sell motorcycle gear and you'll have a trust fund coming from me. About the only thing I could find there now under a search for 'motorcycle' is an International Male catalog reject (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000133XJQ/qid=1142491356/sr=8-28/ref=sr_1_28/002-4575291-9928806?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=1036592) and this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001A86HI/sr=8-6/qid=1142491265/ref=pd_bbs_6/002-4575291-9928806?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance).

Now if only you could get this kind of deal with Sephora...

Get a job at a mall, then you can have the ultimate hookup. You give them a discount and they give you a discount. I used to work at a huge ass mall some many years ago. (Woodfield) in Schamburg, IL. I made friends with other employees and had discounts in almost any store that I wanted.

I actually made an attempt to get a job at a cosmetics counter in the mall, because hey...I'm like...addicted to cosmetics.  But every place in town, short of food establishments has turned me down.  I really don't want to work at a food place of any kind.  I'd be fired before I ever started, although the part where I'd inevitably become disgusted with anything food-related might help me drop a few pounds and turn out well in the end.

I bought $50 of books... but I was out of power so going to Borders was my only option.

Hey, if you use a Coinstar machine, you get 100% of your money back if you get an Amazon gift card!  So go take care of your change and spend it to help FTL at the same time!

Which is the reason I actually read this thread.  I read through all the gift certificate fine print on Amazon to make sure FTL would get credit if I used coinstar, but couldn't find anything relevant.  Before I drag my li'l red wagon full of coinage over to the grocery store:

Ian, do associates get credit if gift cards/gift certificates/coinstar receipts are used as payment?

If so, my dresser is fixin' to get about 200# lighter.  And, this method of supporting FTL should be hounded incessantly!

One FTL inspired shopping trip @ Amazon completed, thru the FTL search link. Ordered (used) Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth, books 1 & 2.
Not sure how exactly I managed to miss reading Goodkind in my almost 30 years of SciFi/Fantasy reading.

I pre-ordered Bullshit season 3 through FTL today. I rarely buy things from Amazon, or from outside The EU in general, because there's a 25% tax on things imported from outside The EU. You pay the regular price when ordering, then pay the extra tax when picking the package up at the post office. If the government catches the package that is, sometimes it slips through unnoticed, but things obviously commercial, like packages with a bigass "amazon.com" printed on them, tend to get noticed. I think it's basically some government employees standing in front of a conveyor belt with packages going by, so it's inevetible they'll miss some stuff.

I'll keep that in mind when buying a Playstation 3.  One thing in a series of things that will be necessary to help me dish out money to buy that little piece of hardware.

Hey honey.  What's that?
Just a new piece of metal and plastic I purchased.
Oh yeah?  How much did that cost you?

I saw that some of the Xbox360 games are going for over $60 after taxes.  I was like wtf.  A good thing about games now is the Greatest Hits collections and such.  Top selling Playstation 2 games drop in price by 50% after 18 months or something.

PS - Amazon is offering a free month of Amazon Prime right now, just got all my stuff shipped 2-day for free. Just have to remember to cancel the acct before the end of the 30 days.

So basically: "I'm fat, but you're ugly and I can diet."

No, not really.  I do think he could use a good supply of paper bags, but he shouldn't care about my opinion.  Sure, like I've always said - I'm no supermodel.  I'm not, however, a corpulent bovine.  He makes it sound like not being a size two is the equivalent of a heroin junkie who is trying to clean up because they just found out they're HIV-positive.  The thing that I hate most in the world is being disrespected, on any level - and Keith is constantly disrespecting me.  Most of us deserve the same mutual respect, and on a basic level that means being treated just like everybody else, in spite of differences and faults.  If you cannot give that respect, you do not deserve to have it given to you.  And guess what?  I'm tired of being cordial.

There are a lot of people that think the internets don't work without the www.

Okay, look in the upper right corner of the BBS.  See the Amazon search box?  You'll also find it on the main FTL site in the banner column.

Whenever you enter Amazon through that banner, a percentage of your purchases will go to support FTL!

Many of you already shop at Amazon, so just make it a habit to enter through FTL's Amazon banners!  Plus if you haven't ever shopped there, go look around, they sell almost everything, and their prices are quite competitive!!

 8)

Alternately, you can just enter Amazon via:  http://amazon.freetalklive.com !

Sounds like a plan to me; I'll try to buy my DVDs from this Amazon link from now on :)

If you got the link right, then you should see that fun little box come up.

And you'll probably have to rewrite the link because what Amazon puts in your address bar won't work. So here's what you need:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/##########?tag=freetalklive-20

(Put the ISBN/ASIN number in there instead of the # signs.)

Nothing too big - old food product/stock (easily discernible prior to consumption).  I believe the item return cost is covered via the Amazon A-Z Marketplace Agreement.  No harm done; I just want my money back.  :)

I'm starting my shopping for the gear we need for our week up in NH at PorcFest next month. Amazon (through the FTL link) is going to be my best friend for the next few weeks.

Right now, it's standard replacement items & updates for our camping equipment, but I am open to suggestions from FTL listeners who are already in NH for "must have" items to add to my shopping list.

I can't decide whether that's well prepared or slightly paranoid...

Probably a bit of both.  Wired magazine also has a regular section where they take common household items and analyze the chemical makeups; this month's target is Cool Whip (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.05/st_coolwhip.html).   8)

Edit: more fun toys (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.05/pl_fetish_p95.html) for the apocolypse.

I don't appreciate the fact that the Brits put vegetable shortening instead of cocoa butter in their chocolate. Dairy Milk bars are much better over here.

You can also use AnyDVD on your computer to take out all the copy protection.  Then you can burn a completely DRM-free copy of the DVD to a dual-layer DVD (provided you have a dual-layer DVD burner).  Problem solved :)

I have a question.  I do most of my shopping off a "wish list" and in fact have distributed same for my Christmas list.  Is there a way to modify my wish list URL so that it will automatically go through FTL's affiliate program?  I tried doing the amazon.freetalklive.com then going through to my wish list and bookmarking it, but from what I read in this thread it seems that this will only be valid for a day.  Find a way to make the link "stick," though and everyone Christmas shopping for me will be stealth donating to FTL.  :)

Hey all - just joined the forum.

I live in Northern Ireland but have started to listen to the show and enjoy it immensely.

I would do a lot of business both through AMAZON and PLAY.com.

MY question is this - I tried to order some books via the amazon/ FTL addy using the amazon.co.uk address and it didn't work. Instead, therfore, I went to the amazon/ FTL addy and chose to be re-directed to amazon.co.uk to process my order.

I'm just wondering if this got FTL the commission?

If not, it may be useful to extend the Amazon/ FTL addy to include amazon.co.uk

Also, might be usefult to contact play.com - they're a VERY popular uk site that is similar to Amazon.

You're saying you went to http://amazon.freetalklive.com and did not get redirected to the uk site?

I initially tried amazon.freetalklive.co.uk and it didn't work. I then tried the amazon.freetalklive.com and, of course, it worked - but it would cost me more in shipping to order directly from the US Amazon.

Sometimes, in the past, to get the book/ cd/ whatever I required (which was not available via UK amazon), I would have had to order via US amazon and pay the extra shipping.

In this case, I was able to *choose* to be redirected from amazon.freetalklive.com to amazon.co.uk (where my desired items *were* availble) to have my order processed - however, I don't think it would have happened automatically.

I just want to be sure - as I do a lot of business with amazon.co.uk and would like to support the show via such - if you are definitely receiving the commission from my recent purchase in the aforementioned way.

Also - as some of my purchases were via amazon marketplace - do you still get the commission from such?

Virtually anything you buy through Amazon, regardless of who the third party seller is, will net us a commission.

http://amazon.freetalklive.com should redirect you to your country's Amazon.  If the redirect is not working, you may use these:

United Kingdom - http://amazonUK.freetalklive.com
Canada - http://amazonCA.freetalklive.com
Germany - http://amazonDE.freetalklive.com
United States - http://amazonUS.freetalklive.com

I've updated the original post with this info.

A suggestion for the amazon redirect:
A while ago you had a page with flag images that we could click to get to the country we wanted to order from, and then you replaced that with the automatic redirects based on the country of the user.

Rather than redirect people not from the countries currently supported to the American Amazon, couldn't you send us to the flag page so we could chose for ourselves?  My guess is that most listeners who don't belong to one of those countries live in Europe, and would prefer to buy from the UK or Germany, but don't know about the direct links.

I got the microSDHC cards so that I never have to pay for games, lol (I bought a CycloDS from another site because Amazon doesn't carry them)

Cool beans. We like to use ours when we travel because we "chat" and talk shit without anyone hearing...or draw pictures of boobies, wangs, and other immature things.

You should try Picross DS.  I play it most nights before I go to bed.  It is better than suduko or crosswords.

Ohhh looks fun...I love puzzle games. My favorite is 7 wonders for PSP, I've beaten it like 400 times, but I can't stop playing. I take a muscle relaxer, a hot shower, and hop into bed with PSP in hand... so sweet.

I also have nintendogs...alot of demos too, my man works at Game Stop so he gets freebies sometimes. He can also 'check-out' games for free. So we try before we buy alot...LOL.

I'll check it out ;)

This, from the person who talked about being too poor to eat chicken and rice?  Please tell me you considered proper diet before ordering these things.

Ian,  how about using Amazon's list tool to create a Free Talk Live recommended reading list?  You could link to the reading list along with your referral code through amazon.freetalklive.com

My roomy just got a kindle 2, any way to set it up so that when he orders a book from amazon on the kindle, FTL gets a cut?

Not directly from the Kindle.  It's possible that if he buys e-books through the FTL Amazon link on his computer it would work.  They get sent directly to the Kindle after you purchase them and I actually prefer to buy them from my computer since I can do it faster and more easily (especially reading reviews).

I would rotate my Amazon spending on waaaay too many horror DVDs and books between the FTL and Anti-war.com links.

I just hope it gets through to you okay, as I always have to redirect from the FTL link to the UK site.

I know this has been answered already, but I'm too lazy to try and track down the answer again-- do Amazon marketplace purchases still benefit FTL if we go through the FTL Amazon link?

Should be... just ordered bike rack for truck bed a couple hours ago, and popped over to amazon link once I knew what item name to type into search window.
There was some set of numbers in the browser page when going thru FTL that hadn't been there when I was browsing directly.

Yes. It's all tied to the link you use to get there. The account you use to buy with doesn't matter.
