Your fake southern accent is very insulting to intelligent southerners. You always use it when you're stating an opinion which you clearly think is stupid. QUIT IT!
-
That is one of Ian's favorite ways to ad hominem attack.
-
One of the problems I have with FTL and Libertarianism in general, is that it does not try to be inclusive. I fear that the ideas of the radical libertarians will never be a viable option unless we find a way to be more moderate! Exclusionary thinking, e.g. all Southerners are stupid, is short-sighted.

Porcupines are very short-sighted. All FTL co-hosts are poruipines.
-
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
-
What's a poruipine?
-

Compromise gets you in trouble in the end. Like that whole slavery thing with the constitution.
-
What's a poruipine?
The funny thing is I knew I mispelled it, and I made it worse when I "fixed" it. I should have just gone with my original crappy spelling. I originaly had "porcipine".....and to "fix" it I deleted the "c" and added a "u"....my cursor wasn't in the right place when I hit the delete key....
Oh, and Ian likes to ad hominem attack bad spelling and grammar too.
-
Hey, I'm a somewhat intelligent southerner, so it's legit for me to do the accent. I'm even guilty of using "ya'll" in my regular speech. :P

What? I thought all of the co-hosts were Southern? Can't they make fun of themselves? If you don't like their jokes, don't laugh at them. Also, call them out on it. I've called into FTL and complained about Manwich a couple of times. Last time, I complained how we made fun of punks and such.

Y'all*

I don't really think it is a southern accent. There are plenty of small town people here in Indiana that talk like that. Last time I checked Indiana was still in a fairly mid-northern location. I guess the state could have drifted since then.
Good point, it's everywhere. However, I've yet to meet someone that talks like that who I would consider intelligent.
-
One word... "Na'wleans"
I think I said too much for today...
-
However, I've yet to meet someone that talks like that who I would consider intelligent.
Exactly.

You should try to get out more.

The trouble with that is, compromise also gets results in our current system. It's important for us to decide whether this is just a great idea to banter around, or if we'd like to actually get some RESULTS... I would suggest that a more moderate approach to Libertarianism would be a very attractive "3rd party" option for the average US citizen. People are SICK of the Republicans and the Democrats! They would LOVE a viable alternative. When I talk to people about my political beliefs, we usually never get beyond the discussion of legalizing of heroin. Seriously, do you think this is the issue which should be seen as the cornerstone of the party??? It's NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!!! Just accept that, and we can MOVE ON! I'd love for the general population to understand what the Libertarian party even stands for! The Republicans have a clear message, that's why they're so attractive. The Libertarian party needs to get the message of Liberty out there... Most people I talk to are economically conservative and socially liberal. Aside from the Religious right, who do you know that is for big, intrusive government, high taxes, etc. LOTS of people have beliefs which are closer to Libertarian than anything else! They just don't know what that word means! If we could be INCLUSIVE, and calm down the ridiculous radicalism which pervades this party, we might actually get someone elected. This is, after all, the POINT of a political party, no?

Exactly.
I would also have to concur.

Agreed.

Huh?? :?
-
Your "huh?" point is well taken. Let's just say the "people" seem to think they know what the Republican's would say on any given issue. Do you think they could do the same for us?
-
does florida really count as "the south"? I mean old jews, cubans, retired midwesterners, a large tourism economy, and surfers arent really "southern" things. Fine, youre south of everyone else but the major parts of florida aren't too much like the rest of the south...
-
Yeah, I don't think Florida counts.

Visit Zephyrhills next time your down here.

One thing that really, REALLY irritates me is when people extrapolate that a mockery of ONE PERSON is representative of a whole class of people. Mocking a Mexican does not mean you're stereotyping all Mexicans. Mocking a moronic Southern bureaucrat is not a statement about Southerners in general. That sort of thinking is what drives politically correct Newspeak.
-

KY is right below IN and it is a southern states. Southern OH and IN were settled by southerners.

Now THAT's an interesting point... However, when they use the accent, they are not mocking anyone in particular. They're simply being sarcastic, stating some stupid idea. Why should that always default to a Southern accent? In this way, it IS a statement about all Southerners. That being said, I appreciate your point.

To carry the thought a bit further: you can talk about Puerto Ricans being lazy, but that says nothing about a specific Puerto Rican. Even if there were a statistical phenomenon of laziness in the Puerto Rican population, that says nothing about any particular individual.
-
Now you're making my point for me... I'm simply suggesting that his use of the southern drawl is a suggestion that Southerners are stupid---WHICH IS NOT TRUE!!! If it WERE true, I would have no problem with his implication.
-

I said nothing about Southerners.
I was talking about Puerto Ricans.
Try to keep up.
(Incidentally: can you demonstrate your claim?)

Obviously prooving issues of IQ are difficult. Here's something interesting I found:
http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2003/pdf/table3.pdf
Just from a quick scan, scores do not seem to vary significantly by region.

You scanned very quickly. Generally, education is considered best in New England and worst in the South. SAT scores have more to do with education than IQ. In most of the South, the ACT instead of the SAT is taken. In TN, for example, usually only the elite students take the SAT. This is even more true in extremely poor areas like the Dakotas.
New Hampshire, a New England state has the highest SAT scores out of all of the states where a very large amount of students take the SAT. New Hamphsire is also known to have one of the best education systems in the nation. It is also the only one that does not offer free pre-1st grade.
-
On a different point... I've just been looking at the pro's and con's of NH, and all of New England, for that matter. Check this out.

I live in Georgia, and know only one person who has a Southern drawl, and he is not intelligent. The other people who do not have the drawl vary. Your data is meaningless; apples to oranges.

Actually, that data is very useful. It shows what many people already know, that people in New England tend to have higher SAT scores than others.
-
Actually, that data is very useful.
Not if one is trying to determine if people with a Southern drawl are less intelligent than people without.

Stereotyping saves time.

Yeah you are.
On a side note, I'm from Indiana and I occasionally catch myself slipping into a bit of a Southern accent, but mostly it's some sort of slight accent that doesn't really match anything else. I think I'm just weird.
-
...I think I'm just weird.
Nah, as far as this forum goes, you are about average.

Good point. Next to some of these people I look like a member of the Cleaver family.

Huh? How many different types of cleavers are there? Are cleavers like knifes and hammers, in that there are dozens of different types?

S'okay. It happens to all of us. :D

Hehehe.. this is a fun thread, y'all!
"I'm goin' mud boggin' t'day, right after I drink this whiskey!" - Those are the types of people that have the southern drawl!
All you have to do to discover how southern FL is, is go east of the interstate in Tampa Bay. Zephyrhills? How about Arcadia? Myakka City? Some places you just have to hear the name to know, like "Deltona".
How about that Port Charlotte, Lindsey?
Where's a CB radio when you need one?
-
Ian, just because you're from Florida doesn't mean you don't have a serious prejudice against Southerners.
Don't get me wrong, I don't give a rat's ass about political correctness. I just want to recognize that this, like many others, is a false stereotype.
-

You can't like mud boggin' and whiskey and be intelligent?
I guess intellegent people have friendly debates over crumpets and tea.
Cheerio!

It's statistically impossible.

I think it's called "muddin'" down heah.

I know we call it muddin in TN.

I'm sure there are some people like that down here, though I don't usually like to associate myself with people covered in mud, smelling of whiskey, and who speak incoherently. :P

Tut tut!

Your fake southern accent is very insulting to intelligent southerners. You always use it when you're stating an opinion which you clearly think is stupid. QUIT IT!
I have a New Jersey/East Coast accent. It is common to stereotype our accents as stupid. With yours, it is the "ignorant redneck" and I'm sorry that you have to put up with that. I only recently found out (if it's true) that 'redneck' comes from the fact that people working outside would get a sunburn on their necks, as opposed to the intelligent, cultured (liberal?) people who work inside. I have no more problem with stupid rednecks than I have with any other stupid person, and stupidity comes in all colors, forms and geographical persuasions. My accent casts me as ignorant and tough (Sopranos syndrome). At least I can sometimes work that one, but it can be hard to overcome that first impression.
The stereotypes are sometimes appropriate, often funny, but they are often NOT funny and they are definitely overused. Whaddya gonna do? [rhetorical question]

Um, here is what I heard. GA has red clay. Farmer's and some other used to put red clay on their necks to protect them from the sun while the worked. This caused their necks to look slightly red.
BTW, the worst accent is the Boston one. I am not worried about people from NJ, heck they don't even have guns up there (except for the criminals). I mean, how tough can people be if they cannot even have a gun.

My favorite accent is one without using contractions. That's how I talk when I'm cornered by cops.

In other news, shut your trap and listen to Jim Babka from DownsizeDC on the show right now :P

Is that a Polish delicacy?

MasterBlaster, Ian's accent is not fake. Ian is from the South, from Florida. So he's not being insulting.
-
...intelligent southerners...
In my experience, intelligent southerners don't speak in that ridiculous way. I love it when Ian uses that accent, as it fits perfectly.
Edit:
...I've yet to meet someone that talks like that who I would consider intelligent.
Oh wow -- Ian had the balls to say what I was getting at in a much more direct way.
