All you have to do to discover how southern FL is, is go east of the interstate in Tampa Bay.  Zephyrhills?  How about Arcadia?  Myakka City?  Some places you just have to hear the name to know, like "Deltona".   

How about that Port Charlotte, Lindsey?

I'm sure there are some people like that down here, though I don't usually like to associate myself with people covered in mud, smelling of whiskey, and who speak incoherently.

I have a New Jersey/East Coast accent. It is common to stereotype our accents as stupid. With yours, it is the "ignorant redneck" and I'm sorry that you have to put up with that. I only recently found out (if it's true) that 'redneck' comes from the fact that people working outside would get a sunburn on their necks, as opposed to the intelligent, cultured (liberal?) people who work inside. I have no more problem with stupid rednecks than I have with any other stupid person, and stupidity comes in all colors, forms and geographical persuasions.  My accent casts me as ignorant and tough (Sopranos syndrome).  At least I can sometimes work that one, but it can be hard to overcome that first impression.

The stereotypes are sometimes appropriate, often funny,  but they are often NOT funny and they are definitely overused. Whaddya gonna do? [rhetorical question]

Um, here is what I heard.  GA has red clay.  Farmer's and some other used to put red clay on their necks to protect them from the sun while the worked.  This caused their necks to look slightly red.

BTW, the worst accent is the Boston one.  I am not worried about people from NJ, heck they don't even have guns up there (except for the criminals).  I mean, how tough can people be if they cannot even have a gun.
