Title: on your FEET! ??? WTF.
Post by: penguinsscareme on July 27, 2009, 10:51:41 AM
There's a new ad on the FTL podcast encouraging veterans to find out more about what government benefits they're entitled to in return to their "proud service."
Mark, did you sign this client?  WTF.  I'd love to hear the explanation for that one.

I think it is a GCN commercial.

Neither Ian nor I suggest that there is anything wrong with accepting government benefits. The government steals from you, there is nothing wrong with getting some of it back. I am not fond of the tone of the ad, but the advertiser says we are the best source of leads for them. They also offered the highest rate we have ever received. Advertising is kinda tough in this market, we make our pay checks from advertising. You know what happens if we don't get advertisers, right?

If you want the advertiser to go away, I will do so for $2000/month on a 6 month contract.

While I don't disagree with the substance of your argument, I am simply turned off by the tone of the ad, as are you.
Mark, that avatar is...yes.

I will say that the show has every right and indeed a real need to accept advertising from whatever business feels it is in their interest to buy spots on the show. I won't suggest that the advertiser "go away", but perhaps they should check their demographic before loading their default ad. I have heard another ad by the same company that lacks the "gung ho" tone, why not suggest to them that one may produce more desirable results than another? As a veteran, I found the ad to be corny and slightly offensive. I find it funny that on the show during which I was considering the ads because of this thread, there was a caller who expressed dismay at other callers who, as Ian put it, want to provide their "cred" by stating their military service. I promise to do my part to provide some financial support to the show, so that you may in the future screen your advertisers, even though such ads may continue.

I will check on the other ad of which you speak, but I must fear of telling the agency that the ad they picked out for my show and is doing so well might not be right for the audience.

I assume you are speaking of AMP. Although very helpful to spreading the show, AMP doesn't go to paychecks. That is only ads.

We do screen advertisers. I try to stay away from advertisers that look shaky or like scams. Obviously, I can't stop them all, but I try to make a cursory look.

Can't we have a thread about how several people have tried a particular advertiser and the product and service have been great? You know one of the primary complaints about libertarians is that they are cynical and hate everything. Everyone take a deep breathe, and think about the gratitude that you have for the advertisers that bring you Free Talk Live and its corresponding BBS. I don't you folks understand that I am not making what I was making when I quit my job in Sarasota 3 years ago. I didn't expect it to take this long.

Yes, I would never knowingly lie to my listeners. They are too valuable. It is one thing for listeners to not like an advertiser for whatever reason, it is another thing to lie to them.

I have pretty much always taken a vitamin, so when they offered to have me endorse the product I figured why not?

Berkey is just a banner advertiser, but I hear that there is no better gravity driven water filter. Is it worth the money? I don't know.

I am ok with whatever advertising you choose that keeps it going. I do not see the advertisers having any effect on your ability to make your own choices. This isn't the Department of FTL, it's simply FTL staying on the air. The pitches you make to earn their money is what has to be done when funds are strained. As you said Mark, if we don't like it then we can pay to not have it. :) Thanks guys!

That is a horrible position to hold.  It is one thing to use government roads, schools etc. because they hold a monopoly on those services but to collect stolen money, is a completely different situation and absolutely indefensible.  This obviously does not include tax rebates etc. as that is YOUR money to begin with.

You pissed about not making much money? Do something about it then, why whine to us? Just taking the piss I am. Problem is that it's hard to get a lot of what one might call mainstream ads from companies people know and trust, honestly a lot of the stuff your advertisors sell can be total shit. The ones I have used are Liberty stickers - very good service, Amazon Canada and Newegg Canada, all good shit. You might have better luck making money through the types of partnerships you have with Amazon and Newegg. I have seen the new water filter thingy in some businesses but the health food/diet stuff, no thanks. Sometimes it feels like everything supporting you guys is either looney tunes Alex Jones type shit or so expensive that I would need to become a federal politician in order to afford it.

Try festivals as well, not a regular source but they can be desperate to get the word out. Isn't Jason O running a brew company as well? They gonna enter festivals? They can tell other beer makers they use you to advertise and lie through their teeth, network. Advertising is serious business.  I think Mark's getting hosed for a hundred bucks a show to cover that much territory, when a product relating to military service hits a 1:10 listenership in thirty markets.  Thats a ridiculously hot number.  Thats like counting cigarette lighters during Freebird.

Yeah, and if one has read the aforementioned essay in the aforementioned book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism:_The_Unknown_Ideal), one would see very clearly why carrying this ad was a very bad idea.

Theres a difference between being an active participant in certain gov-related programs, and a passive participant.

That line is trademarked by the guy who used to wash the gas chamber floors.

Seriously, this ad is infinitely more dishonorable than my millions in medicaid fraud - it doesn't insult and diminish the government, it glorifies it!  It's like a giant "just kidding, sucka!" label attached over anything decent that FTL (and, by very close association, the FSP) has ever stood for!

If you pay taxes, you sure as hell deserve any rebate you can get.

I do find the ad out of synch with what FTL is all about, but I understand why Matk and Ian are running it. These are trying time for scoring advertising contracts - most companies are trying to cut costs, and advertising can be one of the things that gets curtailed.

You are mistaken. Government officials actually WANT to help. Most bureaucrats think that they are the intellectual elite and that if it weren't for people like them most americans would not be able to function in life.

No, it's unattainable by me either.  ;)

But I do have a history of saying no to jobs that involve even the remotest amount of government butt-licking...

There's a big difference between getting some of your stolen money back from the government and making a philosophical compromise in its favor - that ad represents the latter.

Mark,

I recently used WebEx and was very impressed.  A salesman wanted to sell me a database and he walked me through his presentation using WebEx.  It was really flawless.  I wish that I had a reason to use this service.  Unfortunately, the state won't let me teach my classes from my desk at home  :(.

If you worked for the government's army you may as well try to get as much money out of them because you were in their army as you can. Most veterans I know only signed up because of the government benefits after enlistment, and some during enlistment.

I have to say, in all honesty, that I took full advantage of everything the Air Force offered. And, they never lied to me and lived up to every promise.

But then, that was over thirty years ago.

I was able to check on this today. They did test another ad in some other venues and it did not test as well. It is an unfortunate fact of life that one person's offensive ad is another's attention grabbing ad. They are not using the other ad at all at this point, and will not be placing it on FTL. Why would they? FTL is one of the best venues that they have with the current ad.

Mark when you talk to advertisers do you let them know about your heavy angel bigfoot demographic?

Government officials actually WANT to help. Most bureaucrats think that they are the intellectual elite and that if it weren't for people like them most americans would not be able to function in life.

Yes, that's right. And it's important for liberty supporters to realize that it doesn't change the moral quality of their actions one bit. People who throw pot smokers in jail cells "for their own good" only do so it because it makes them feel good. It is totally selfish, and it is the symptom of a sick conscience. And of course those who redistribute money to "help people" are no different.

my mom is a government official.  She wants to help, so you're right.

but she wants to help her purse explode with all that stolen money.  Don't get it twisted, most bureaucrats don't care if you are working or unemployed, housed or homeless, or alive or dead.

"voluntary tax system means if you don't pay then yes, men with guns will come and if you don't come when they call you, they'll kill you.  I don't see a problem with that."  -mommy.
