Is Mark having a nervous break down?
« on: July 24, 2009, 09:12:30 PM »

What do you think? I'm not trying to hate on the guy, but I'm listening to the Thursday podcast and I'm starting to think so.

Maybe I should make a poll?

If you really think so.....do you think that starting a thread or a poll about it is the best idea?  Would you appreciate someone doing either about you?

There was a loud disagreement at the end of the Thurs show that spilled over into a bonus show.

No one has conjectured that I could quite possibly be a Libertarian posing as an Anarchist trying to pretend to still be a Libertarian; or what I like to call an Anarcho-Hustler.

Wouldn't the vast majority of people have a nervous breakdown if they had to deal with Sam, Dale, and Ian at the same time?

I appreciate Mark's passion.

It doesn't get in the way of his ability to articulate his arguments.

He just needs to take off his shirt.

Having listened to the podcast, I'm surprised Mark didn't lose it sooner.

how many times do they have to bring up Ghandi and Martin Luther King?

Can't they see a difference between a millions strong movement trying to get equal rights for blacks, or trying to remove a colonial power, with a hundreds strong movement trying to get rid of government all together?

How many black people would be against equal rights for blacks?

How many Indians would be against not being ruled by Britain?

Its much easier to get people activated about equality, than it is to get people go against government. Equality doesn't have to address any issue of freedom, it doesn't matter what laws there are, as long as they apply equally.

And of course, in the last 20 years, political action in America has brought about decrimmed and medical cannabis in several states, legalized prostitution in others etc.

And civil disobedience has done what exactly?

Also the idea that because statists use politics to increase the state, means that any politics must increase state power is idiotic. As libertarians we support the politics that helps liberty, and don't support that which hurts liberty.

This also assumes that somehow civil disobedience is the method by which you get rid of political power. In the last 30 years in America thousands of people have engaged in civil disobedience and it has done nothing.

And Sam acting like numbers don't matter, ridiculous.

Yep. Mass civil disobedience would probably work really well.

Mass anything would probably work really well.

Lets say you only need 1% (low in my opinion) but run with it. That basically means the FSP would have to get 15,000 people to actually move  and all those people would have to be ready to go to jail indefinitely/be beaten to death civ dis people.

Plus what your protesting can't be unpopular with the general public beforehand, and at the moment most freedom issues are.

Also civil disobedience is a political action.

What exactly did King and Ghandi accomplish politically that was good from a libertarian perspective?  Jim Crow laws were thankfully gotten rid of but the Civil Rights Act took its place.  Ghandi help gain independence for India but not liberty.

Just because the didn't accomplish something for liberty doesn't mean they didn't accomplish anything.

That's why I qualified my question with the word "politically".  The Civil Rights Movement in general probably changed some prejudiced people's attitudes.  Many in the Civil Rights Movement were also anti-Vietnam War.  Not anti-war mind you.  Most of the Civil Rights Establishment looked the other way when Clinton was bombing people.  In many ways, they were behind the curve.  I think Thomas Sowell is a vile neocon but he has some good scholarship on how Black Americans were closing the gap with Whites before the Civil Rights Era and the Great Society.  Additionally, the color barrier in Baseball was broken in the 40's thanks to market forces.

On the flip side, I have to hand it to Mark. I think I'd want to punch Ian the second I saw him.

I actually really like Ian though...I still think I'd want to hit him though
