Ian on Lectures
« on: April 25, 2009, 02:17:56 AM »

Ian expressed a hatred of lectures, but wasn't the Liberty Forum made up largely of lectures?  As far as I know, he liked much that.

I agree about the stupid high school note copying.  I always thought it was pretty stupid and just sat there listening and looking around the room at everyone else furiously writing everything down.  Dale was right about not being able to listen well and copy everything.

The Liberty Forum is good for ratings.

I didn't like high school lectures, either. But, I had some great college lecturers. Mrs. Stein, my history prof, really made things come alive. It was almost as though she'd seen those battles herself! (And, given her age, she might have.)

And, I took notes, using a personalized system of notescript, a sort of shorthand. It allowed me to quickly go over just about everything said, which gave great results come test time. I still have my notes.

Has Ian heard Dan Carlin"s "Hardcore History?" Carlin is a great lecturer.

I still go to public lectures, and have given a few myself.

I've never had a problem with lectures.  As long as I enjoy the subject I tend to enjoy the lecture.

You shouldn't be sitting there furiously writing down everything that is said.  What you have to do is learn to identify the important information and write that down.
