He is a trainer and not a cop.  You should ask questions about cops from the perspective of talking to someone who trains them.  Yes, you can train the police without ever having been one.

The police chief of Shreveport, LA says he reminds every graduating class that they have special powers that even the POTUS doesn't have, "which include the ability to be able to suspend your rights." That means the ostensibly Constitutionally protected rights of every individual his officers stop, regardless of whether the contact is a felony stop or a simple traffic warning. Is this attitude common? Is this something your impart to your trainees? Does your Mayor communicate a similar message? What is the gist of your training regarding the 2nd amendment rights of the citizenry your recruits are supposed to "protect and serve?" Do your students take the oath to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic? Is that oath accompanied by any specific training or discussion of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights? Do you teach your recruits to use the Taser for pain compliance or only as a last resort in lieu of their firearm? Does your department have a traffic ticket quota? Do your recruits engage in hazing or other rituals designed to increase "brotherhood" or unit cohesion at the expense of the letter of the law, official procedure or "civilian" rights? Do you teach your students to regard drug defendants as scumbags who are guilty until proven innocent? How about those accused of child pornography possession? To what extent do you train for joint operations with Federal agencies? These are all I can think of off the top of my head...

Are the people who want to become cops generally the geeky type who were picked on in high school?

still, all good questions and good reasons to immediately disband jackboot hit-squads and replace them with voluntary peace persons

hey, many communities have had volunteer firefighters for hundreds of years(glad we have better shit now that bucket brigades)

so why not volunteer peace persons...LOCAL everyday people...

and most definitely no returning wacky mercenaries who've already murdered enough men, women, and children in lands far away...and not so far...

Yes, you can train the police without ever having been one.

Thats stupid... How do you feel you have the obligation to train people who have control over our lives for laws that may hurt or harm more then do good when you have never performed the job and have no understanding for the consequence? How do you feel about encouraging and helping maintain laws that convict peaceful people who have convicted no crime or dont no harm to another? Why do you believe this is right or for the best? shit you can ask them any number or questions. You'll just get the same lame ass response. Its the law and ignorance of the law is no excuse. Your fellow humans are flawless when they pass laws and are in no way persuaded by corruption or bias.

Do you train cops to intentionally make people incriminate themselves by the way they ask questions?

I think this is a good question.  I second it.

As for my own question: When I as a citizen run into one of these "hard ass" bully cops, what is the best tact to take with them to minimize the damage they do to my life?  I know this is a broad question and will vary from person to person, but are there any common psychological patterns you notice in the hard asses that someone on the receiving end of their wrath can take advantage of to mitigate any consequences?

As an aside, I'd like to submit a new word into liberty lexicon.  When someone gets drunk and gets belligerant, we say he has "beer muscles."  (Trying to start fights with bigger people over little things, etc.)

How about when a cop is abusing his authority we refer to it as "Flexing his badge muscles?"

Ian/Mark, feel free to cop the term and use it on the show.
