I fully agree that those that volunteer for the military are simply government employees...but...Do those who were conscripted into service deserve special benefits or reparations for their enslavement?   There are still a hell of a lot of vets that did not volunteer.  This is a question I have pondered without an answer for a long time.

Unpaid enslavement?  I believe these forced conscripts are paid so that the government can avoid charges of chattel slavery.  Why would being a forced employee mean they deserve less compensation for the same work?

Even chattel slaves were sometimes given an allowance.

Sure...they received compensation...but...If you are forced  to work at the point of gun are you not still a slave?   What if you were conscripted and taken away from a private sector job making far more than the govt. compensation?  Who compensates you for the difference in wages?  I guess you are just shit out of luck.  The best you can hope for is not to die...I guess.

I admit that I have a soft spot for those that were forced to fight through conscription.  Yes...maybe they should have refused...but...that is a much easier thing to say than to do.  I barely missed Nam by 1 year...I often have wondered what I would have done if I had been drafted.

If a mob boss fails to make payment to a hit man for executing an assassination, does the hit man get to come after me for the payment?

The hit man freely contracted the service...just as one volunteers for the military.  A conscript is forced to participate in violence. He could of course refuse..but..the consequences are generally dire.

I would think the mob boss would have a serious problem on his hands in your scenario. :|

This commercial makes me physically ill. The whole military/veteran culture is utterly vile, and anyone who voluntarily becomes involved with it deserves nothing but contempt.

I must agree...but..what do we do about those that were forced to fight?  Must we not judge them differently?

Yeah, I guess luke is right. If "serving" your country involves killing little brown people in other countries that never attacked us, I suppose they have served us in some twiseted deranged way. Of course, the guy at McDonalds also "serves" me just as well and he never askes for special benefits to be paid to him out of other peoples tax dollars, but I guess the military is special in some way right? After all, they dont get paid................. oh wait, yeah they do.  :?
