another bad commercial
« on: June 24, 2009, 08:05:43 AM »

I'm going to complain about another advertiser, but I don't want to risk embarrassing the guys on the air. I respect their decision to run their show how they wish, but this client is from a mortgage company targeting the VA (veterans' association). At some point it shouts "ON YOUR FEET!"

The ad basically proclaims that veterans have, by service to their nation, earned special "privilages" such as these loans. If it's somebody's private bank that wants to give discounts to a soldier, hey that's their perogative, but I was honestly surprised to hear that kind of nationalism on FTL.

Yeah, the ad bothers me. Especially the part where the asshole starts giving out orders. "On your feet!"

Don't get me wrong--I don't mind short ads in podcasts (though I listen to podcasts to avoid the massive ad blocks that dominate radio). I'm glad FTL is able to attract advertisers, and don't mind the little bit of inconvenience of listening to them. But, some are better--and more effective--than others.

Veterans have indeed earned access to special things by virtue of their service. Veterans served their country, thus they get access to special things.

I was referring to Luke Smiths pathetic attempt to inspire some libertarian hate with his "veterans served their country" shit, luckily no one took the bait.

Unless he was joking, its hard to keep track of all the ego maniacal contrivances and "characters" on this board.

The reason why you people keep slandering me as a "troll" is because it's easier for you to do than to actually refute anything I say. On other boards I have been on, the definition of troll is somebody who posts spam and/or makes personal attacks. But on libertarian boards, the definition of troll seems to be somebody that disagrees with libertarianism. So basically you want no opposition on your forums, but not even one of your forums makes this clear at the point when people are registering as a forum member. If you are going to have this attitude then it should be made clear at the point when people are registering on your forums that people who don't agree with libertarianism and say so are going to be regarded as trolls, otherwise you are misrepresenting yourselves and your forums.

Anarchir, I am very dismayed that you are jumping upon the "Luke is a troll" bandwagon. I thought that you and I had a very intelligent conversation the other day, and now you have decided to sink into this mud. You need to learn to follow your own debate pyramid more often. Shame.

I think Luke sincerely thinks what he is saying is right.  I don't think he is intending to start and argument it just that he disagrees.  I was making fun of the cartoon as much as anything.

I don't agree that veterans get privileges for service.   No one joins the military for free.  They get paid and privileges are part of that pay packet.  Doesn't make them noble or special.  They are employees of the government who have negotiated a compensation deal for their services.

It doesn't mean every action in which the military is used for is in anyway just or right either.  Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus or so the story goes.  It doesn't mean Judas was noble because his actions were the will of the government of Judea at the time.  Japanese Imperial Army soldiers were paid to guard the forced labor of British and American captives in the building of the Burma Railroad.  The ones who didn't die and returned to Japan at the end of the war received privileges from the Japanese government for their service.  Yet it still didn't make what they did as soldiers noble or right.  It was just a government paying off their hired guns.

To say other wise means you have total blind faith in every thing your government does.  Which is dangerous because government is made up of people who could have less than honorable reasons behind their actions.  Like wanting to loot the government treasury with a useless wars to give their friends over priced no bid contracts.  Or to pillage natural resources for company's which give these government representatives kick backs.  Or grander still to enslave all Americans with endless debt of a bankrupted government.

I fully agree that those that volunteer for the military are simply government employees...but...Do those who were conscripted into service deserve special benefits or reparations for their enslavement?   There are still a hell of a lot of vets that did not volunteer.  This is a question I have pondered without an answer for a long time.
