Your friends
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:15:20 PM »

Most of my friends are Democrat (Socialists). I have had people ask me more than once "so are you a Democrat or a Republican?" I know that these options aren't really very fair but by Libertarian I mean "liberty minded people" that want to, at the very least, minimize government. By Democrat and Republican, I mean the issues that Democrats and Republicans don't agree on (abortion, gay rights, etc). By Radical Left I mean like people that oppose private property and capitalism but also oppose government. Just wondering what most of your friends' political views are.

Most of my friends are libertarian, but I still have a large amount of radical left friends.

I don't know. Most are apathetically libertarian-esque, I guess. Certainly freedom oriented, though perhaps inconsistent. My closer friends at least. Intelligent, but with specialized areas of "real life" interest that they don't think involves politics, even though politics affect everyone. Most like to play with these issues during philosophical jibber-jabber, but reconciling abstract principles with the real seems to be a problem.

I got into an argument with an acquaintance at work the other day about illegal immigration and just ended up yelling "bullshit!" a lot, which I realized afterward was a very poor conversion technique.

I think he means real life friends.

Oh yeah...they think I'm insane. I had this one friend that claims to believe in a 'strict interpretation' of the Constitution, who is a Bush lover. When we were hanging out I'd quote some of the founding fathers on their views on government, and he'd say shit like "Freedm and liberty don't work, that was like 300 years ago". Someone should put him in a cage and throw away the key and see how he fucking likes it.

I don't talk about politics with friends. It's a dangerous road to go down. So I actually don't know the political views of any of my friends except for one, who's a classic small-government conservative who hates Bush and thinks politicians are fucking us all over.

That's how I am most of the time. It's a subject I try to avoid. That and religion.

I'm really vocal about my political views...
Maybe that's why I don't have any friends...
Libertarianism isn't very populer here in perth.

Libertarianism (with a little L if it wasn't at the beginning of a sentence), to me, borders so closely to a philosophy that you almost can't really convert someone no matter how hard you try, you can only introduce them to it, explain it, answer questions, guide them, and hope that they eventually realize that politicans don't exist to decide how to take your money and spend it.  It's so different from issue-based politics that when you discuss issues with friends, libertarianism can make one come off as an uncaring douchebag, as opposed to someone who just believes we're human beings who have the right to not be unjustly robbed.
