Your favorite series.
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:19:54 PM »

What series should I start next?

Suggestions will be added into a poll when I get enough.

The series has to be completed, no further episodes to be done.  Should be a few seasons long, at least.

List your favs, and what you like about it.  No spoilers please...  seriously.

I'm finishing Northern Exposure in the next few days, need something to start downloading.

Firefly is an excellent choice, of course. The reasons to like it have been discussed on here before, so I'll skip.
I saw Twin Peaks mentioned on the Question Thread. That's good, too, but it's been a long time since I've seen it, and am not sure my specifics on that one would be at all helpful

Deadwood and Rome - the stories are well written, the characters are downright juicy, and the production quality will put you in the middle of it all.

Dead Like Me - Stories are good, characters are quirky, and it's got a likable morbid humor.

I know you're criteria for series which are complete, but I think Dexter might be a good exception to the rule. Each season has a definite ending - no cliffhangers. It's like watching a novel.

Most of the other long time series I watch are sci-fi, so I'll skip those. When it's wrapped up, you might want to give Battlestar Galactica a try. It's sci-fi, but that's not "the one thing". It's war, the end of everything, and watching what happens when people actually do lose everything. Deals with what makes one human and civilized. Looks at the best and worst in people, through religion, tradition, politics, relationships...

Thank you, ma'am.  Duly noted.

Theres the word I'm looking for.  Quirky.  I'll have to wiki Dead Like Me.  Never heard of that one.

I'm gonna fast-track this process.  Two days, hopefully less.  I want to start the download Thursday night, if possible.

Might skip the poll.

I'm running out of show.  Unacceptable.

I'd second Battlestar, for obvious reasons. :)

I'd also recommend Las Vegas. It got a little cheesy at times, but not really because of the acting. The show was damn fine drama and has a lot of fun guest stars and musical guests--oh, and Molly Sims, who is a fine looking lady.

If you want to "try" Dexter and you're a reader, check out "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Though the series is based on the  books, I found enough differences for both to be enjoyable.

I quite liked The Sopranos.  And the X-Files.  The only other shows I watch are still currently running.

Since there's still no poll.  Firefly is the best series ever.  It's shorter than you were looking for.  After that, Deadwood, Weeds, Dexter, Sopranos and Rome.  Eventually, you'll be glad about watching each of those.

Firefly from DVD w/ special features w/o commentary tracks.torrent

Also on Hulu

I'll second Firefly and Seinfeld.  Star Trek: TNG would be a close runner-up to those two.

I'm waiting on the poll until I get enough suggestions.

Anyhow, the Firefly thing intrigues me, because I never heard of it and you mentioned it with glittering praise a while back.

I am not getting Seinfeld, I saw all those a bunch of times.

And Sci-Fi is not an option.  I don't like the Sci-Fi genre at all, not even a little.  It bugs me for some reason, I have an aversion to it, so no matter how good it is I wouldn't enjoy it.  No offense to the sci-fi fans, I won't say anything specifically negative about it, you guys like what you like, and thats cool.  I can appreciate that, its just not my thing.

--

So far, I'm split between Deadwood and Firefly.  I don't know anything about either of them, except that Deadwood is obviously a western drama.  I think I remember someone telling me once there were true-life characters in it like Calamity Jane.  I could dig that.

Oh, and Dead Like Me.  I guess I have some Wiki'ing to do.

Keep those suggestions coming, folks.

I disagree with ST:TNG as a recommendation for brasky. I scheduled my Saturday nights out in my early 20s so they started after the 7pm time slot, but I like the scifi. Brasky has said he does not care for it. With Firefly & BSG, you get western & war stories that happen to be in space ships. With any of the Star Treks, you get scifi first. There's also not as much depth to the characters. (Enterprise being a possible exception.)

P.S. Typing BBS posts on the iPhone is a royal pain in the ass.

Ooh, I was planning to give Deadwood a try a while ago and then forgot about it - thanks for reminding me.  I'm getting season 1 now.

I'm in the middle of Legend of the Seeker right now - at first I was cringing the differences from the books (I'm still at the very beginning there), but eventually it grew on me.

I'm surprised no one mentioned The Prisoner yet.  I've been stuck the middle of that for a while - it's something you have to be in the mood for.

I'll hold out on BSG a while longer.  BSG fans - what's your elevator pitch?

(Tip: include bittorrent links when referencing a series.  Multiple people reading this thread may look for it online, and if they use the same link there's mutual benefit, especially if you know that it's a good rip.)

Well, if you don't like Sci-Fi then Star Trek anything will not be your thing.  Still, it's a good show and one of my favorites :)  Picard was awesome with his French-guy-with-British-accent badassery.

Star Trek now feels socialist and detached from reality (and too many little kids running around, and too much robots' rights bull, etc), and Babylon 5 is what knocked it out of the spotlight.  That show did everything better!

(Except marketing.  And holding on to its actors.  And knowing if you're getting canceled or not.  And movies / spin-offs.)

Once you have a replicator and there is no scarcity, economics pretty much goes out the window.  I can usually ignore Star Trek's statist undertones because of that.

Old school Star Trek fan here.

I never did like any of the ones after the original.  Didn't care for the movies after they came out with the save the whales one.

A couple of years ago, the motor went out on my dryer.  While I was at the laundromat, I picked up one of those local free papers and read a comparison of Kirk to Jack Bauer.

I used to hate 24 for obvious reasons, but I started watching it again with a new perspective.
