Israel or USA, No I don't think either will win, and no I really don't care or give a damn at all anyways because I don't watch sports (except Motocross and Supercross), but if any country were to win I think I would be most satisfied if it were one of the two.

I've been watching the games, and it's still too early to say. I found that Mexico has an awesome game. Watch out for Mexico. Mexico opened up the event against South Africa. They were great to watch...strong no-nonsense soccer, and they looked great in their black uniforms. I'm looking forward to their next match. They should just wear the black uniforms.

Isn't black their 'away' uniform?

I don't know, but it makes sense since "away" uniforms tend to be darker in colour.

Another fashion thing I noticed is that a ton of players on many teams are wearing the same boots. The boots have an orange heel, and the rest of the shoe is gray. During the Argentina/Nigeria game, the camera did a close up on a player tying up his boots, and I noticed that the boot had the Nike logo on it. I'm guessing that Nike is paying players a shit load of money to wear those boots. These boots seem to be everywhere, on the field.

Avshae, I started a general thread about the world cup in the high-jack free zone:

http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=33916.0

Since yer thread is more of a specific poll, I figured a more general thread should be used to talk about the world cup.

I was kind of hoping the more economically free countries would do better - England, Australia, USA, Switzerland, New Zealand, and especially Chile.  Oh well...

I was kind of hoping the more economically free countries would do better - England, Australia, USA, Switzerland, New Zealand, and especially Chile.  Oh well...

I don't know what this indicator indicates, since:

1) Countries which lead the financial crisis of 2008, and lead the world as far as income gaps, are doing excellent according to this index (USA 6).
2) Countries which are leading the current European economical crisis are doing not so bad, (Spain 39, Greece 52) much better than European countries with balanced economies that withstood these crises rather solidly.
3) Countries where people commonly get murdered for petty cash, women commonly raped after violent murder of protector, (Honduras 28, El Salvador 29), and full of disease, those are doing quite good.
4) Dictatorships like Zambia (49) and Botswana (50) are doing not bad - can a "free" economy can exist in a dictatorship?

Perhaps free economy (at least by this index) is not necessarily good economy.

Or maybe it's a negative indicator for World Cup final standings?
New Zealand #3 - out
Switzerland #4 - out
Chile #5 - out
United States #6 - out
Australia #7 - out
Finland #16 - out

(Although it does seem to be a good indicator of qualifying countries).

On the other hand Brazil #111, Argentina #105, Paraguay #91, Ghana #71, Uruguay #62, those are all in the quarter finals. Seems like this is a negative World Cup success indicator!

"Free economy is not necessarily good economy"?!  Blasphemy!  I think you're just doing mental gymnastics to justify Israel being ranked #78 in economic freedom, below most progressive Muslim countries (and India / China are gaining fast as well).

Economic freedom is a very important indicator, if not THE most important.  Long term economic growth always follows.  Yes, the economically free countries are more dependent on services and trade, and thus they decline more during a crisis, but they still perform better in the long haul.  Yes, some of them are dictatorships, but sometimes a rational dictatorship is the best you can do to keep out an irrational socialist one or mob rule.  And income inequality is a good thing - an inevitable byproduct of civilization.

But, yeah, it does not correlate with soccer very well, which is a purely cultural thing.  For example, it's a mystery to me why the former Spanish colony and still super-Catholic nation of Philippines is so notably absent from world soccer (and it's not just an Asian thing - look at the Koreas).  And then you have the mythical failure of Russia -- a nation obsessed with soccer, and it seemed to be doing well in the European Cup 2 years ago -- yielding its place in the World Cup to its Slavic kin in tiny nations like Slovakia and Slovenia...
