Somehow I don't believe being number one makes much of a difference in attention to number two. So what's the real reason Ian wants to be #1?

I can't remember exactly (because podcastalley.com only keeps monthly, not daily, records), but I'm pretty sure FTL was number one when I found it (over two years ago). I think being number one did get me to listen.

I don't have access to podcastalley.com's internal data, but I can say that in any given Google search result, #1 gets at least twice as much traffic as #2.

It seems hard to imagine.  You'd think it would be enough to be near the top of the top ten.  Couldn't it be that the potter (insert expletive here) is just wildly more popular, and we're good at keeping it close in the voting?  After all, libertarians seem to be naturally advocacy-oriented.

The top nine could be fairly normal, and #2 is really good, and Potter is just way the hell out.  Because its Potter.

I think it's a mix between wanting to spread the show and pride, but mostly because he wants to spread the show.  Of course, he could also want to spread the show because the more people that listen, the more radio stations will carry him and the more money he'll be able to make.  I'm sure that's not his only motivation, but I'm betting it's part of it.  And honestly, is there anything wrong with that?  I don't think so.

I think it is a bragging rights/marketing kinda thing.

And it can be used as a selling point when trying to get on stations, or more likely, trying to sell live reads. Mo' ears = Mo' money.

It's also better from a sales standpoint to both advertisers or additional stations.
