Realistically, I think violence is what will really change things, as much as I would like to believe otherwise. I think there were plenty o' colonists who would have been happy to pay a tea tax and just be colonists. Nothing has changed.

Probably, but this goes back to that thread about the revolutions, and will we see it in our lifetime or not.  Personally, I don't see it happening for a while.  I don't think we have enough people on our side yet.

My experience is that foreigners don't hate us (people of America), but that they have aversion towards US government. Rightfully so. This government has been constantly giving itself role of the world's police that "brings" peace in nations that are "incapable" of doing so by themselves. Sometimes, if needed, invading other countries. Lovely! It's nothing wrong with disliking a powerfull group of people that shakes foundation of the entire world. However, I know that same people do like American life-style, culture, wealth, opportunity and chance.

One thousand years ago, we were meddling in their religion.

As for money and power, yes - the rest of the world fears the United States.  Our country is virtually the only world superpower left. 

What's superpower(ful) in comparison to power(ful)? I believe that the only power US has left over other countries it's military power, and that's what the rest of the world fears. However, its rank in other areas is less than powerful (more people in prison, per capita, than in any other country; death penalty; freedom of press; and all issues we constantly discuss on bbs)

foreign meddling was the only thing i checked,   though if you changed lack of freedom, to taking our freedoms for granted because stupid republicrats want "safety" and tyranny,  while giving up our freedoms

People hate the U.S. because they fear the U.S.--with some justification. No other nation has meddled in so many other counties. The U.S. government see it as it's duty to govern the world.

Perhaps we ought to take a cue from Costa Rica and get rid of the military. Our government hasn't shown that it can handle such power in a responsible manner. We can contract defense out to Canada or Mexico, or some other country. 

Uh, I don't think that part about no other nation meddling as much as the US is true.

For one, European nations colonized the US, booting out pretty much all the natives.  This includes England, Spain, and France.  Additionally, a few European countries basically carved up the entire continent of Africa among themselves and turned them into colonies.  To this day Africa is engulfed in territorial battles over lines drawn on a map that don't mesh up with tribal and cultural boundaries. 

I dunno, I guess it has to do with how you look at it.  The US is in a huge number of countries, mostly doing nothing.  The shear volume of nations we're involved in is probably higher than any other nation.  I would still contend though, that in the global scheme of things, there are European nations who've meddled with greater impact than the US.  I mean, they colonized an entire hemisphere and carved up an entire continent.  That's pretty big meddling.

What an excellent thread. 

Having lived in other countries first Korea and much later the UK, my observation has been they don't like our meddling.  They (I mean other government powers and those that benefit) want our money they just don't want it to come with strings attached.  While in Korea it seemed to me the locals enjoyed the economic boost that a heavely subsidisded defence gave them.  They had protection from the North Korean threat and didn't have to come up with the money to fund that protection.  As I understand it, the US is now doing that same sort of thing in several more countries.  There are still US air bases in the UK as another example.  Which when I attempted to get a job at one US airbase in the UK, so I could extend my stay, I was told, "we would love to have you work here but we are required to hire local residents". Essentially telling me to go home like a good little slave and pay taxes so we can hire UK citizens and boost their economy.  The United States Government continues to work on buying friends but ending up with nothing more than resentment from other country's citizens. Because often US money only helps to prop up bad governments and improverish American citizens through higher taxes.
