Jeez, didn't know Porc'n'mass here worked for the U.N. language classification police...  Crossed out "Spanish" next to "Catalan".  Occitan, which is less common and less distinct, is covered by "Other Iberian".

Alex if you don't know that I was just fucking with you, you need your head examined.

I dunt spek faggot.

That sounds like a heavy Scottish.

I donno, the Caribbean language sounds good, but have no clue what it is.  I'd like to have to learn it from living there.

Languages in general?  Russian and Japanese.  Maybe whatever they speak in the Czech area,  That'd be a good place to disappear.

I would do Classical Latin.  I want all of my skills to be completely theoretical and impractical for real-world use.

I prefer learning a viable language like Ruby or Python (3K). :-P

Heh. I was forced to learn a foreign language by my high school from the romance languages - Classical Latin, French, or Mexican Spanish. I picked Mexican Spanish. So this question only had one true answer from me - Mexican Spanish. And the Spanish program had some of the worst teachers I've ever had. Thankfully, after this year I finally got out of it (met the requirement), but my teacher this year was a hoot. She had us do an activity in class where we moved around the room, but since the AC was supposedly not working (during the winter, mind you) she kept on yelling at us to move slowly so the room didn't get hotter than it already was. I wisely refrained from remarking that the Thermometer in the room said 69 degrees Fahrenheit, and we could use a couple degrees of fast movement.

I might of actually learned something if the teacher hadn't spent all that time yelling or having us play scrabble. In Spanish, with the English board, resulting in an awkward distribution of letters. As a result, in an entire year of Spanish III, we only covered the first three chapters in the book.

That sounds like the two years of high school latin I took.

This is a follow-up to the "Which foreign languages would you learn?" poll from ~3 months ago, which currently has 23 / 37 votes going for the Latin group.

There's no "magic pill" this time and you only get one vote.  Please post which you picked and why.

I suspect that most people will concentrate on proximity to New Hampshire or winter vacation potential rather than economic factors, so it'll probably be close between Spanish and French.  (Or not - please vote for whatever strikes your fancy.)  I'll post subtotals per language once the voting slows down.

I would like to learn more French.  Je parle un peu de francais.

My focus in high school and University was French and I still speak/read it passable-well, though my vocabulary is limited from a few years of neglect.  I've actually studied Italian, German and Spanish on my own, but I'd like to learn Italian more in-depth: formal (metropolitan) Italian, since I'm a city girl.

Spanish, because I want to be able to make a correct order at McDonalds.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-immigration, and if McD's wants to hire non-english speakers then so be it, even if they're "illegal" humans (illegal alien is a doublethink word).  But I won't go to their restaurants until they hire someone who speaks the same language, but seeing as how the trend is going more toward an increase of spanish only, I think it makes the most sense.
