I dont doubt there was a 'Jesus'.  Theres too much evidence to say there wasnt.

What he was is a different story.  He was probably a man with a very charasmatic personality who had some devout followers to his cause, and its likely his cause was simply standing up for what he believed in.

Charisma goes a long way.  Word of mouth, legends grow around living men.  Pretty soon, he is elevated to a status where people speak of his exploits which have been blown out of preportion, and the government comes knocking.  He gets crucified and his personal strength carries him through the ordeal with some backbone, and the legend continues to grow.  His body is stolen, rumours abound, and fast fwd to today.

Campfire stories, based in truth as all great stories are.

That Jerry Rice was one hell of a receiver.

Okay.  Under normal point/counterpoint post rules I would say:  Sources, please.

And then you say:  Uh, the bible.

To which I would respond:  PPBBBTTTHHH, which if in person would be made by sticking my tongue out and blowing juicy noises representing a very rude fart.

Which brings us to your counterpoint.  Son of god, sources asked and answered response being the bible.  The fart.  Take it from there.

Do you agree that god is real?  Certainly, we must agree that jesus was real.  God created jesus.  So, it follows that jesus must be a son of god.

It only follows that we are all sons and daughters of God if you can prove your proposition that God is real. But I see what you did there.

 Yeah Royce, I totally should've understood that argument. :P Yeah I guess I can see how IF you could prove the existence of God, that we would all be his sons and daughters. I see what you are gettin' at, I smell what you're steppin in, I get the dill... pickle.

No.  Mary and Joseph created Jesus.  The whole immaculate conception thing is silly.

I heard a historian once say that there were a bunch of Messiahs going around during Jesus' time.  Given that a lot of the miracles Jesus did could have been easily faked by a magician and his accomplices or come from exaggerated stories (ie: one of his followers breaks into his tomb, takes the body; water to wine; healing people who are pretending to be sick, etc), it wouldn't surprise me at all if Jesus was just one clever Jew.

Most probably, Jesus was a follower of John the Baptist, and possibly took over leadership of John's cult after that man's death. (Some scholars even think the two were the same guy.) Years after his death, Paul elevated Jesus to Son of God status.

As a philosopher, Jesus had nothing new or interesting to say. "Be nice to others. Give to the poor." All of his ideas had been expressed elsewhere--and better--before.
