What the hell is a democrat?

I thought democrats was pretty much socialists. But wikipedia says Centre-left, progressive, liberalism(Global terminology).

Progressive was only a term to get more equal privileges of controlling the government so that one is void nowdays.
Centr-left... That is socialism without calling it socialism, right?
Liberalism... Umm, you can't be both a socialist and a liberlist(as in freedom) in the same time.

Basically, they're social democrats. The ostensible difference between democrats and republicans is that democrats tend to support like abortion and stuff. The main difference right now is that republicans are socially conservative, whereas the democrats are not. Really, they're basically social democrats.

Obviously, a "progressive" must be progressing toward something. That thing is socialism.

Democrats believe in majority rule; that is, the idea that it is possible (and morally good) for the majority to vote away the rights of the minority.

The simplest way to put this is the way my government textbook put it:

Democrats are socially liberal, and are to the left on economic issues.

Republicans are socially conservative, and are to the right on economic issues.

Basically, Democrats like freedom when it comes to social issues, and Republicans like freedom when it comes to economics.  Of course, there a plenty of exceptions to these guidelines, and neoconservatives completely destroy that definition of Republicans.

If you want a real understanding of American politics, I think it's best to think in terms of who supports the parties.  The two major parties don't really have ideologies-- they've historically pulled 180s on their platforms in response to demographic changes.  Republicans and Democrats are defined by the interest groups who bribe them.  Republicans are bribed by corporate interests and Protestant evangelicals, and Democrats are bribed by labor unions and persecuted social minorities (blacks, gays, etc.).  The reason these two parties have survived so long is because they are so malleable; they're meaningless words used to describe the group in power and the opposition, whoever that may be.

I often hear this, but don't really think it applies any longer. Democrats, who are supposed to love personal freedoms, are behind outlawing tobacco. Long ago, they fought against the draft, but now advocate forced public slavery. Republicans are second to none in their call for control on unions, and seem little concerned about economic freedom.

Really, they are just different wings of the same big-government party, the Republicarts.

The simple definition isn't the right one.  Pretty soon the textbooks will have to change, once again, what it means to be a Democrat or a Republican.
