(Yes, I know some of those features are possible on SMF as well via add-ons, but most are not.)

REQ: "View First Unread Post" option.

How is this different from what SMF already has?

[RANT]

That's probably the thing that appears to the right of a thread title in thread lists, but it's not powerful enough for me, nor, frankly, are vBulletin's features.  I've been doing a lot of awesome AJAX coding lately, and if I was writing a forum interface it would blow y'all away!

For threads under say 300 posts, all the thread data would be downloaded at once and rendered on the client-side.  This means a powerful and instant thread search popup, filtering tools like a calendar popup showing posts per day and letting you select specific days, poster popup letting you filter the posters, etc.  One neat interface idea is a horizontal thread summary bar that lets you jump to any post by clicking one of its cells.  The width of each cell would represent the height of one post as a percentage of the thread, though for super-long threads it would even out to keep the smallest cells visible.  Cells representing your own posts could appear say in red, and posts of other people you like in specific colors you choose.  Hovering mouse over a cell in this bar would show a helpful "post summary" tooltip (a very common space-saving element in my AJAX work), and you click to scroll to it.

I don't have the time to write a full-featured forum package, obviously, and the prospect of reinventing the wheel with all the necessary server-side code bores me - I want to specialize on innovative AJAX human-computer interaction instead.

I've given some thought to starting a site that has a bot spider other pro-liberty forums, parse out their threads / posts into a relational database and from there generate XML (gzipped once more browsers support it), and creating this AJAX viewer for them.  The core purpose of such a site would be to provide a common static archiving mechanism in case one of those forums goes down, and it would also allow "link"ing various common poster identities across multiple forums.  The interface would handle everything on the client-side except searching (a server-side mechanism could allow searching across multiple forums) and posting (for that it would link you to the actual forum).

Like I said, I don't have the time to develop this idea further, but if other people were interested I could contribute some time to helping them out with the client-side interface stuff.

Maybe if you said something about the features you want to see on THIS BBS, then something useful might happen.

You want to export the complete drivel that so much of this BBS posts?! I'd concentrate on having something worth exporting, first. :)

Hey now, I've written good stuff here.  It might just be 1%, but it's still worth saving.

As a matter a fact I'm growing my hair long again, but I just gel it back for now.  Could make a little pony tail already if I wanted to, but best wait a few more weeks.
