The National Anthem
« on: September 19, 2008, 04:02:34 PM »

I'm a sports fan and I go to a lot of live events. Of course, they always play the national anthem. I always feel weird about standing for it. While they play the song I think of all the blind nationalism that en flicks people into thinking that no matter what the U.S. does they must always be proud of their country. Like many on the boards I'm not proud of what the U.S. has done both domestically and abroad. So why should I stand for it?

In a way I kind of feel like it is along the same lines as not standing for a judge.

I was wondering what you guys do and how you feel when they play the national anthem.

I don't take off my cap because I'm Jewish. But I do the rest of the fun stuff.

I can't even recall how long it's been since I was somewhere that the Anthem was sung..

I don't stand up and I enjoy seeing people get pissed off because of that.

I just graduated HS, and they would play it every morning and have us say the pledge. I would stand so I didn't stick out and piss people off, but I wouldn't put my hand over my heart or say it like everyone else. The people who sat right near me were friends and understood why I didn't, so it never caused me any trouble.

I used to sing it a lot in high school.  It got to the point where we would end up doing the entire thing.  Not just the verse verse.  I can't even remember the rest now.

I stand, but I don't salute. Same with the pledge. And when I say the pledge it goes "I pledge allegiance to. . . liberty and justice."

The last time I went to a baseball game, I was in the indoor concourse getting a drink before the game.  I was still there when they played it.  Since I wasn't outside in the stadium or in my seat, I just flopped down in a chair and noticed that most of the people in there stopped and saluted the televisions.  They really have us trained well.

My God.  Did you start laughing?  I think I would have just out of sheer bewilderment.

I'll stand, with respect to those around me. Just as I would if I were in a foreign country and they played its anthem. But, no hand on heart.

This. No reason to get in a fight with a belligerently drunk nationalist at a baseball game.

I'm too much of a wuss to cause a scene. I just make sure I am in the bathroom when the music plays.
