In the past, rich people were defined as those who could take warm baths, owned carpeting, and had servants to carry away their chamber pots. Poor people today have electricity, running water, eat healthier diets than the rich of the past, and live better than the middle class of other countries.
We really gotta redefine poor here.

Other. They keep redefining poverty so people who once would have been considered rich can be considered poor. Because the definition is met, poverty is higher. In reality, people are getting richer--even the poor. These are the people who believe that everyone should be guaranteed an equal outcome. Their simple little minds think the world will be perfect once everyone is equally enslaved.

In real terms, poor people are much better off right now than they have ever been.
Think about it like this. The lowest income people in this country still have just about everything someone like Warren Buffet has. Poor people have cars with GPS systems that do just as good a job of getting them from point A to point B as Warren Buffet's driver uses. Computers, cell phones, air-conditioning, huge TVs at one point in history, were reserved only for the wealthy. These days, just about anything a wealthy person has is available to most poor people, just in a lower end version of that same thing.
In terms of buying power for basic necessities like food, medicine and such, people might be poorer today, but the amount of dollars you have is not as good a bar to measure things by as it once was, mostly due to technological advances that have brough the price of most hard consumer goods down to the level of reasonable affordability to even the poorest people in the US.
Hookers and blow? Ok, maybe out of reach of a large percentage of poor people, but most other "gadgets" are far more in reach.
Id say its a wash, really. A few pluses, a few minuses.

Its funny you mention that. I was just reading about Hong Kong last night, and that came up. People in communist countries tend to all be equally poor while people in free markets have incredible disparities in wealth, but even then the poor among them are richer than the poor elsewhere.
Its also funny how we preach to one another.

I made 17 grand this year. That puts me well out of the legal definition of poverty. While I have financial issues at times, that is generally due to my own financial inexperience and mistakes. Not keeping track of bills well enough, balancing and that sort of thing. Still, I make enough to afford a nice 2 bedroom apartment with a small yard and a large basement as well as take care of two ferrets, a dog, and a turtle. I think I could do with much less money and not be in poverty. That's so long as I don't have insane medical bills (like from cancer) or make stupid decisions that people tend to make like buying a home they cannot afford or wasting money on game/theater tickets and going into credit card debt.
Soon as I am able I plan on paying off my little bit of debt, eventually work with my woman to pay off hers (she has considerably more so) and then work on developing savings, hoarding food, and building assets to truly consider myself wealthy.

I don't know but poverty is on the increase in the US but decreasing in New Hampshire. Surprised? Shocked?
