I had to vote Ninja.  It's a more refined way, is more artistic and requires more knowledge, training and skills.  In short, because not every liar, dead head thief, self-serving and self-aggrandizing lout can call themselves one.  Plus, ninjas save the girls better, have more ingenious plans and cooler weapons.  And more honor.

P.S.  If a pirate fails to take his stuff with him when his lover kicks him out, does his pirate status get revoked?
