Sometimes you need to freak someone out if they don't have common sense... NH10 was promoting violence. That's something that can get Ian in trouble and even have the feds shut this forum down. If posting his personal info gets NH10 to realize that he isn't so anonymous, maybe that can knock some common sense into him.

I would agree with what you're saying, except that John is not some objective arbiter of what people deserve.  He's a guy who posts people's personal information when he gets pissed at them.  He may be right, he may be wrong, but he's not karma personified.  Yes, whatever you make available on the internet is basically fair game-- but at the same time, anonymity on internet forums allows people to open up and be honest about things they otherwise wouldn't, and most of those are not necessarily things for which they should be punished.  I think it's a shame if people no longer feel like they can do that, for fear that somebody will expose them for ridicule.  "Don't be a douchebag and that won't happen" is a good reply to that, except that, again, John isn't the universal determiner of douchebagness.  It's like saying that the innocent have nothing to fear.

That's pretty much my only comment on the matter.

Who cares?  Why are you guys making such a huge deal out of what he did?  NHAT probably doesn't even care, because in reality - he's not being affected.  Nobody from this BBS is going to come to his house and beat the fuck out of him because John Shaw saved them a step in acquiring his information.  Jesus shit, man.  Lay off, Richard - your crusade is pointless.

The info is also mostly wrong.

That’s the main thing I think is bad about this—posting wrong information about someone could get an entirely innocent person in trouble. I have no idea whose address or phone number that really is, but it’s not Rob’s. It may have been, years ago, or it may be someone else’s. Beth (and Dan, heh) is probably going to have a good laugh about her inclusion in Shaw’s little tirade, too, but I could easily see how some people could get very upset about such misidentification.

Good point. Some poor guy could get beat up by someone who has the wrong man. Not that I think anyone on this BBS would do such a thing.

Where is the option for "I really don't care about internet drama?"

*Sigh*

You people don't read before you post.

I made it quite clear that I did NO research to get that idiots information.

Yeah, it was probably outdated, it was from 2002-2003. It was definitely legit. Doing a search on gadget42@earthlink.net (The email account from his profile, which he had to have CHOSEN to make public.) gets four or five results. One of which links to a post made at forum.freestateproject.org. Another goes to a liberty dollar post. The rest go to some parachuting bullshit. I didn't have the wrong guy and I didn't put anybody at risk, so can the "Defenders of the Innocent" nonsense.

THE POINT WAS PUTTING YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT ON YOUR PROFILE WHEN YOU ARE AN ADVOCATE OF VIOLENCE IS THE ACT OF A MORON. (Also not acting like a total cunt.)

At least exercise the minimum basic effort, for crying out loud.

Waiting until it blows over and people feel like talking about other things again.   :)

So if it’s genuine, and merely out of date, my earlier point is only more applicable: Street addresses and phone numbers tend to get reused by others when people move.
