I've been over this one before.
I personally think it all boils down to profit. Example, you take a torrent or burn a disc from a friend, for personal use, no problem. You make a couple hundred and sell them, you're impacting the creator of the property because those who would be willing to pay have not paid the owner, but the pirate.
Anything I take, I'd just as likely do without if I had to buy it. In the past, this was accepted all over the world, people had twin deck cassette players specifically for this purpose. Same with VHS. But now that the internet has made the trend faster and cleaner, the artist gets pissed. Screw 'em. That technology will eventually catch up and make burning impossible, but someone will decode it, and so on, forever. It'll never go away, so they'll just have to accept it as part of creating a desirable song or movie, its the flip side of fame.
