Is ideas property?
« on: January 04, 2007, 08:53:05 PM »

This "Intellectural property" wich I would rather call "Intellectual priveleiges" is confusing me. The right to use that property is essential for property and so an mp3, document or schematic can be property I suppose because there is something produced and so the right to use that property is the creators. However ideas are in nature viral. Even if you have an mp3, document or schematic the conent of that, the idea, can be copied in an instant and be replicated which it is everytime you take a look at it and by that instant can create your own property from that idea.

But the property rights is the right to make use of it in anyway and that includes the right to copy. Now someone else copies this just by looking. I suppose one can not retain the right to copy if one doesn't defend that feature of the property. Which you will not do when you publish or show it to someone, right? So I suppose ideas aren't property, right?

I've been over this one before.

I personally think it all boils down to profit.  Example, you take a torrent or burn a disc from a friend, for personal use, no problem.  You make a couple hundred and sell them, you're impacting the creator of the property because those who would be willing to pay have not paid the owner, but the pirate.

Anything I take, I'd just as likely do without if I had to buy it.  In the past, this was accepted all over the world, people had twin deck cassette players specifically for this purpose.  Same with VHS.  But now that the internet has made the trend faster and cleaner, the artist gets pissed.  Screw 'em.  That technology will eventually catch up and make burning impossible, but someone will decode it, and so on, forever.  It'll never go away, so they'll just have to accept it as part of creating a desirable song or movie, its the flip side of fame.

creating property rights to intangibles via privilege requires that you violate labor-based property rights to tangibles...

Please nobody post here.  The original poster can review our previous debates, and post there if he wants, in the following thread, among others:
http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=10158.0

Posting here to refute BT is only going to give him a pulpit to pound previously debated statements into a fresh mind for his suppositions.
