You can't protect the password so long as you use their wifi port. They can capture all the data, even the password, it may be encrypted it is entered, but encryption in itself is not absolutely safe. Thus my point remains, don't use a wifi spot you don't know jack about.

It's sufficiently difficult to hack as far as I'm concerned.

Of course, but never impossible, and not warranted to being lazy with one's gates and locks.

If you're using pop3s on port 995 then you're sufficiently protected to keep the vast majority of government intelligence agencies out of that particular data stream.

Though if I wanted to read someone's email, I probably wouldn't go that direction.

If I were truly paranoid, I'd be using PGP or something like that for email between me and all the correspondents I could get to participate.  I've been thinking, actually, that it would be great to get M$ and Apple together to agree on a turnkey encryption feature at the client mail app, and convince the user to set it up as with anything else.  The defaults should be secure, not open.  Then the linux people and the 3rd parties would probably adjust, and we'd all be sending encrypted mail and instant messages by default.

The major advantage in this, is that people who choose to encrypt their messages to and from specific people would not be "flagging" LEOs sniffing in their mail to any potential interest.

Edit: Added "between," friends->correspondents

I agree, because I'm tired of LEOs thinking, "Oh well you gotta be a criminal because you want to hide your credit card data from me!" I guess these fucksticks want a pound of my flesh too. :lol:

Just add Enigmail to your Thunderbird, and you're all set.

I deliberately go through port 995 to get my email with SSL so I'm not giving my password to everyone between me and my email server.
What makes you think port 995 on that server is in fact encrypted?
That's just a convention... like that port 80 will serve HTTP.

Anyway, surely 99% of open WAPs are people who bought a linksys 3 years ago, plugged it in, and "it seemed to work"
By the way, the default admin password is "admin" (no username)

This is the list I always use:  http://www.phenoelit.de/dpl/dpl.html

...not that I've ever used it :P
