If I were truly paranoid, I'd be using PGP or something like that for email between me and all the correspondents I could get to participate. I've been thinking, actually, that it would be great to get M$ and Apple together to agree on a turnkey encryption feature at the client mail app, and convince the user to set it up as with anything else. The defaults should be secure, not open. Then the linux people and the 3rd parties would probably adjust, and we'd all be sending encrypted mail and instant messages by default.
The major advantage in this, is that people who choose to encrypt their messages to and from specific people would not be "flagging" LEOs sniffing in their mail to any potential interest.
Edit: Added "between," friends->correspondents
