It's fair game if you are brodcasting it. Sorry. Commercial radio and wi-fi are pretty much the same thing. The argument is over content.

What?  I'm not arguing over "content"!!!  I'm arguing over the right to own/lease a portion of a pipe that IS OWNED by some company or person other than me!!!!  A company or person that has put his/her/its own blood, sweat, and tears into building/homesteading this pipe!

Now, if somehow the content that I was viewing was able to be leaked out, and you could receive the content WITHOUT AFFECTING my bandwidth usage, then again, I'd have no qualms.  But, as reality would have it, in order for you to receive this "broadcast" data, you'd be using my bandwidth!

Ok...new analogy.  Say science found a way to send water over your wifi connection, but you still got a bill for the water.  Is it OK for you to steal my water?  Keep in mind that when you steal my water, my water meter is going to show more usage.  What if, like water, my internet bill was based on how much I used...in other words, what if I was on a per kilobyte usage plan?  If you continued leaching on my connection, you are going to wind up forcing me to pay money that I should not rightfully have to pay for.  Is that fair?  Now...if you could somehow get the water or stream the internet data right out of the air, without having to leach of the water or internet pipes that are connected to my house, then I'd have no problem with it.

If you were passing the water through my land, I would take as much as I wanted.

It's obvious, then, that you don't have a conscience.  When you steal bandwidth, you aren't "sticking it" to the company...you're "sticking it" to an individual that actually might care about how much money he/she spends on his/her internet service or how much bandwidth they have at any given time.  And it is because of people like you, that I'd make for damned sure that my line is tightly encrypted.

Heh...and as for the water pipe case...if you simply tapped a main line, you would not affect the bill of an individual, as the water meter would typically meter the water coming into his/her property.  So, in this case, you'd just be "sticking it" to the water company.  But even if the water that was sent to this individual was somehow metered before going underneath your property, you don't care about who you "stick it" to, so you'd apparently have no problem with tapping the line after the meter and "sticking it" to the individual, due to the fact that you care not about neither the person's or the company's right to the property they own that is running through the pipes.

In that case, if I were the water company, I'd just have to go to greater lengths to make sure that my pipes are not prone to theft by people like you.

Did I ever claim to have a conscience? My motivation is the survival and pleasure of myself. You could almost say that I'm just another animal. I don't try to stick it "to the man", I find it to be a waste of time.

Think of it this way:

The router is something you own, and your neighbor is specifically targeting and manipulating the software in such a way as to deny you of property (the bandwidth you paid for).

The big keyword being specifically, as in, a targetted, intentional attempt to deny someone of property.

All that being said, I don't think it's a big deal.  It's just something that happens.  A little bit of common sense will go a long way.  Just like you put locks on doors to keep people out of your house even though burglary is illegal, you should encrypt the router as well.  All modern wifi routers can do it.

I'm sorry but if the signal passes through MY property, then it becomes mine. Solution, buy more property or limit the power of your router. Of course with the right equip. they can still pick up your signal, so I suggest not using a wireless router.

Even if it means infringing on another's right to property?  Are you a Libertarian or not?

Oh earthwormzim I find you so ignorant it amuses me. Are you really a libertarian? I never said I was a libertarian... although I can define myself as such I am much more of an Anarchist. Will you compare the use of radio waves to the killing of babies next? If I directly tapped into their cable line and stole internet that would be a much different situation.

I get the feeling that you think that wifi somehow eliminates bandwidth limits; that somehow, the wifi signal only sends out signal, that you only receive...and that the number of computers receiving the signal can be limitless, without affecting the amount of available bandwidth per computer.  If this was all true, then it would be quite different, and you could probably justify your theft.

Cutting in on a wifi signal is exactly like directly tapping a line, being that once you are on the signal, you are occupying a portion of the physical pipe that connects the computer to the internet, every time you send and receive signals.

In radio, the number of receivers can be limitless.  It does not matter how many receivers are receiving the signal...the signal will always remain just as strong, as long as you are close to the source.  This is true for the wifi itself, but it is not true for the physical pipe connection.  Every extra computer on a connection sending and receiving signals further decreases the amount of available bandwidth that is supplied by the pipe.

Eh...I am apparently not explaining this very well, but...I don't think it matters how well I explain it.  No matter what, you are going to continue to look for a way to justify your theft.

Expecting stuff for free, at the expense of others...kind of sounds like grab-ass Socialism to me.

I work in the communications business, I understand how these systems work so you don't need to "dumb" it down for me. Are you completely missing the whole physical connection aspect? PHYSICAL CONNECTION. Phone lines, power lines, coax... these are all physical connections. Radio waves are not a physical connection. I don't care what the radio/router is attached to. The radio waves are not physical. Not physical not physical not physical.

So, what you are saying is:  Wifi enables me to steal resources on physical lines, so, because it is similar to radio, in that it sends it's signal through the air, it gives me the right to do so.

Wifi enables you to steal usage on those physical mediums that you have not paid for.

Call me whatever you want. Socialist, Democrat, Satanist... Regardless you are arguing that I don't own things that are on or pass across my property, since you want to sling around political labels... that sounds very socialist to me.

Anywho...have fun stealing.  Hope none of your neighbors have to suffer the unfortunate consequences of being nearby with a wifi connection.
