I think the first one is the only sensible bookmark. Then, if I'm caught up with new replies, I click the second and see what other threads are active. That's been my habit on all SMF forums since the paleolithic era.
How do y'all do it?

It just so happens that if I choose "Open Location..." and type "b" into the field, bbs.freetalklive.com comes up in typeahead, and then I press return, so I never bookmarked it.
From there I typically go to "Show new replies to your posts," (if desired--or maybe I'll select a board and post, if I came to post a new topic) and when those run out, I'll "Show unread posts since last visit."

The poll question does say "or whatever other shortcut mechanism you use" - I was specifically thinking of history auto-complete. If you enter from "bbs.freetalklive.com" then that should be a vote for "Root Index". Sorry if I didn't make it clear.

Well, I type one character (sometimes two--don't know why) but anyway, can't change it now.
Besides that, I don't decide which of the links you listed comes up...I just type the first character. I suppose if the heuristic in Safari changed, it would pull up some other page on the BBS (currently, it happens to bring up "bbs.freetalklive.com/" but I don't know why it doesn't bring up "http://bbs.freetalklive.com/unreadreplies/" which is the most common link I click on the site.)
Guess it's worth discussing why I do it. Apparently, because three (four?) keystrokes are easier than going to the bookmark menu. Cmd-l, b, return. Then I still have to click "Show new replies to your posts" if that's what I want to do. Whatever. Never put any thought into it. Links I may not remember are in my bookmarks.

Poll reset.
I used to have a script that took me to the "Unread Replies" page if I typed "ftl" without arguments, or to search results if I typed something after it. Also "fsp", "nhu", "nhl", "fk", "sea", etc for other forums.
But "Unread Replies" is what makes the most sense I think.

I'm such a loser that I leave it open in a tab and continually click unread posts over and over until something that strikes my fancy pops up.
-
I enter this forum with a combination of anticipation and dread. :P
No bookmarks for me with this forum. I just roam around until something strikes my fancy. 8)

Either unread posts or updated, depending on which one I was on most recently.
I start typing "bbs.f...." and hit enter when it pops up in the window.

Maybe this BBS needs a "random thread" feature (like Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random)).
