Power.

God as used in society today, is control, and control is power.

In hindsight, I really don't like all this animosity toward God.

The animosity is towards what people do because of religion, or in the name of their god.

There is no animosity toward any "god", since an atheist cannot be angry at something which they believe does not exist.

Actually, I find God -as depicted in what is suppose to be his own autobiography- to be a colossal dick to in the same way that I find Hannibal to not be a sane human being. :9

Hannibal was the finest commander the Carthaginians ever had.
