Poll

Do you think FTL would be MORE or LESS effective at growing and spreading a message of liberty, if the show had a 'lighter mood'?

Yes. I could get more friends to listen if the political topics and philosophy discussions weren't so involved.
- 6 (22.2%)
Yes. I would listen more often if content were a little more varied.
- 8 (29.6%)
I think the growth rate would be about the same.
- 5 (18.5%)
No, I think in order to spread a message of liberty on a radio program you need to talk about it a LOT.
- 4 (14.8%)
No, I think if FTL lightened things up a little, it would not be as effective at WAKING PEOPLE UP.

What are your thoughts on the MOOD of the show, and how that effects the growth and popularity of the show?

The situation we're all in is very serious.  Opposing global authoritarian government is no laughing matter, and the show should reflect that.

Fuck that. It's bad for morale. People need to be able to laugh from time to time. Even the Jews in concentration camps made up games and shit so they wouldn't be so fucking depressed.

So Ed, would you say FTL is a little too doom and gloom sometimes?

I was accused of "getting depressed too easily" by Ian...

but really, I think that, rather than actually getting depressed by the show, I'm just smart enough to know that long stints of negativity tends to cause many listeners to tune out - that we could be catching and activating.

I'm of the mindset that a show with the right mood and mentality would "wake people up" and activate more libertarians and small government folks in a way that would put the Alex Jones and other kook crowd to shame...

Yep, that's exactly why I tuned out. There's only so many "a bunch of cops murdered/beat up/stole today" stories that I can handle in one week, much less one night.

My favorite episode ever, and I can remember the entire show clearly from memory, was June 5th, 2006. That was the cutting episode, and some of the finest radio I've heard to this day. In fact, I need to go find that mp3 and listen to it next time I get stoned. It was fucking fantastic.

Heavenly bliss. :)

There's a group of people that want to be victims that respond well to doom and gloom. I don't think it's most of the population though, so it'd probably get fewer but more loyal listeners. I don't think that's the goal of FTL to get fewer listeners and preach to the choir. So I'd go with a lighter tone.

Varied content would be a plus.  I used to listen religiously.  I would turn on the radio every night, and get upset when I wasn't home to listen live.  Now it doesn't phase me.  I've heard it all before.  I still find myself agreeing with Ian's principles almost all the time, if not all the time, but for fuck's sake...can we have a little fun too?

I think the articles should direct the show if they are funny then the show will be funny if they are serious then the show should be serious of course the callers will take the show in the direction they would like also. If the show is on a serious bend and someone wants to lighten up the mood then call in and lighten it up.

I'd like to add to what Slim wrote..... If adding more humor to the show is important to you, Johnson, I think you should call in more often with oddball news stories & discussion topics. I haven't noticed too many callers being cut off for calling in about something other than politics... of course, if you can get a few women to make your phone calls for you, wouldn't that get your topic changes bumped to the front of the line?

Better yet, he should stop sending me political issues prep and calling in about philosophy, and instead only send me hot talk topics.   :P

I have plenty of political issues prep from our listeners' e-mails.  I have so much that I could do multiple shows using exclusively e-mailed prep.

I do my best sending in odd subjects that are not political for example top 10 lists

I came for the politics.  I stay for the pack rats and slutty cheerleaders.

I like in depth involved discussions, but I think the show needs someone on it to lighten it up a bit, like Torgo
