It's not just possible statists I'm worried about.  I don't want the wrong kind of libertarians there either.  They can really be just as bad.

We're libertarians.  No 6 of us agree on everything.  I'll be ecstatic if we can reduce the size and scope of government by 2/3rds in my lifetime.  Most of us agree on that.

There's no such thing as the "wrong kind of libertarian" by my book!

If what they do harms others, then they're not libertarians.

If they're doing something screwed up that affects no one but themselves and their property - then who cares?

There's a difference between harming a person or whatnot and harming a cause.  I've addressed this in another thread.  Being a Libertarian doesn't make you useful, or at the very least, likeable.

A person who doesn't represent our cause well can be as harmful as someone who attacks our cause.

The more people who want a smaller government, the smaller it will get.

The more small government people that look fucking crazy, not many people will be convinced to join our side.

If someone is going to judge a political system on the looks of the members, and not on the principal of the ideals, then they probably wouldn't be a libertarian anyway. It's not something that you just decide to do because it's the popular thing to do.

That'd be great if we all lived in a magical mystical fairy land, but unfortunately, we're in reality.

There's a reason that presentation is such a big part of MBA school and the corporate world.

a Hyperbole: Would you listen to that wide eyed bum on the corner yelling about religion?  It's like this to a lesser extent.

I wouldn't listen to a wild eyed bum because If he isn't able to even take care of his own basic needs then, he cannot posses much wisdom.
But if the person was clean and had something reasonably intelligent to say, their appearance would not factor into it. I know that a lot of people are shallow enough to think that a clean cut man in a business suit is somehow more respectable than a guy in a t-shirt and blue jeans. People who are intelligent though know that what clothes you are wearing, or what style your hair is cut in has nothing to do with how intelligent you are or how good you ideas are.

Most of the people who order the most horrible acts imaginable are dressed up in nice business suits, remember that the next time you judge someone based on their taste in fashion.

I voted for quantity over quality. In general, quality is more important. It may be in this case, as well, but I think that even if people who don't fully understand freedom join the FSP because they want their drugs to be legal or they want to pay no taxes or whatever (even if they paradoxically disagree with other tenets of libertarian views) - if these people joined FSP and helped it achieve it's goal, they will get what they want, ad so will FSP.
