Kudos to Brian Wolfe. Well said.
I think the majority of the people who say it sucks are people like Bill Brasky who don't have much experience in anime, but are knocking it because it seems to be the popular American/Manly view that is more likely to get them karma points. Heh...it appeas that Bill Brasky thinks that anime watchers like to paint their toenails...whatever.
Don't ever wanna actually admit to watching silly little cartoons, now, do we?
Are you still mad Wormy? Dont be, it shows a lack of maturity.
I dont need experience to know it will be visually repulsive to me. I dislike the style of animation used in the overwhelming majority of the examples I've seen. I also dislike the whole fantasy genre, it doesnt float my boat at all. I dont like the LOTR movies, but I like the books. I dont like the Star Wars movies as a whole, but I can see their appeal and believe the body of work they represent is worthy of respect. There are individual scenes in star wars I enjoy, like the landstrider battles and the desert planet stuff, they were interesting to me. As a whole, I will probably never watch the two trilogies.
As I mentioned in the BT thread, this whole argument is based on personal opinion, and as such, I am entitled to believe whatever I want. I believe anime sucks. I wont watch it episode per episode, but probably would for a few minutes if there was an interesting scene. Regardless, at no time did I really belabor the point of the depth of suckitude, I just voiced my opinion and responded to the argument as it unfolded.
It should be noted, as I also mentioned, nobody forced you to respond. In doing such, you expose yourself as being not just mildly interested, but a full blown addict (for lack of a better word). That shifts the theme of the argument onto your habits, not the medium of the artform. You are personally responsible for an awkwardly placed opening salvo when you directly stated I had no idea what I was talking about and had confused anime with hentai. I did no such thing. Your immediate charge into correcting my "mistake" with a wildly speculative suggestion that my appreciation for the artform was compromised by the idea that I was watching animated pornography made you look like a real dick, pal.
Furthermore, it was also questioned "why can one opinion be more valid than another? Isnt the purpose of debate to exchange ideas?"
Yes, that is exactly the purpose of debate. I wasnt debating. I was stating my opinion. I dont care what your opinion is. It means nothing to me if you like it or if you dont. However, once that shift occoured and I was buried under a landslide of titles of quality anime, it became immediately obvious that your purpose was no different than mine, no debate was to happen, and it was simply two people believing themselves to be correct. And, we are, because thats how opinions work. But the Big List is not a form of debate either. It is possibly the most crude form of debate, trying to convince an adversary your position is correct by listing something the opposite side cares zilch about.
So, now I have more opinions. You have too much time, watch hentai AND anime, have very little in the way of agreeable social skills, no respect for anyone's opinion but your own, and cant tell the difference between debate and opinions.
So, does anime suck? TO ME, it does. But should we all reorganize our speech patterns to reflect PC sensitivity? "I would like to say, and this is just my opinion, and you may not agree with it, but anime sucks, no offense." That sounds great. We could do that for everything, as to not offend the people who like anything we may dislike.
OR WE COULD JUST REMEMBER THIS IS WHY THEY ARE CALLED OPINIONS, bitch.
