Junk mail is a funny thing.  My friend has one cat that's on Republican mailing lists and a cat that's on Democrat mailing lists.  The Republican cat always gets better pre-approved credit card offers...

My middle name has a letter transposed in the way the DMV spells it, clerical error I refuse to fix for spite.

The other day I got new car insurance, and as I was filling out the "secure form" online, it suddenly flipped from the proper spelling to the way the DMV spells it after I hit "NEXT" to flip the page.

Apparently, they're wired right into the DMV to see if your license is valid.

-

I always watch my mail to see that spelling, but I've never seen it anywhere yet, 'til now.  (The mail I rip thru, in a big pile at the bottom of my steps.  Its approximately a foot deep.)

I'm a vagabond now, the info on those cards is like a zillion moves ago.  But that doesn't matter, what matters is that it's the same number every time.

"They" just need to identify you once (via store cameras perhaps) to link it into your database record - maybe not today, but you never know how long that information is stored.  Then suddenly "they" know a lot about you: what time you're not home or not at work, your travel patterns if you shop at different stores, what you buy, your financial / psychological profile, etc, etc, etc.  Unless you work as a top-notch DBA for a while, you cannot even imagine all the ways in which information can be used...  :x

A lot of stores allow you to use them without filling out the form.

Once again...  It doesn't matter what you put on the form, what matters is it knows its the same unique ID every time you shop.

The way you beat the system is by swapping cards with other people (strangers), or not using them at all.
