"Freedom of speech" is a misnomer and probably shouldn't be used in this context because it just confuses people.
I think Ian should have fewer rules about what we, as guests on his property, can and can't say.

No, it's not a fucking argument because it doesn't even relate to the question. The question was, do you support freedom of speech on this BBS? He didn't ask you whether or not you think Ian should regulate speech on here. He wanted to know what YOU think about speech on the FTL BBS (it's really a yes or no question).
We started our own BBS because we're tired of the bullshit and the trolls here. If you weren't someone who just fucking registered and had any idea what you were even talking about, I'd consider explaining myself a little more thoroughly to you, but it seems to me you're just a new guy trying to look cool by hopping on this bandwagon. Sorry Mr. Lee, but you're not. You look like a little kid trying to tag along with everybody else and have no real opinion of your own.

Does freedom of speech (in the sense that you have the right to say whatever you want to say) ever exist on private property? I don't think so. So there you have it. I don't "support" freedom of speech on this BBS because it exists (or would exist) only by the indulgence of Ian. Frankly, if I had a problem with his rules I would leave.

Even in the US, with our so-called "free speech," I'm not really free to say whatever I want. In my own home, yes (for now). Technically, I guess I really can say whatever I want, when and where I want, but there would be consequences - some legal, some social. Even if that freedom was absolute, it doesn't transfer to other venues. The Tos that I agreed to is pretty clear that there are a couple of things that will get people booted. I clicked "agree," so they apply. I didn't have to -- I was as free as any other person to close the browser and forget about joining.
I'm a long-time lurker, recent member, but I've never seen a BBS with such a low rate of moderation as I have on FTL. Some of the exchanges may not be to my taste, but I appreciate the freedom that I do see here. If a conversation is a little rough for my delicate sensibilites, I don't have to join in, or even read it. If someone is a complete asshole, I can put him on ignore. As a member of the community, I've agreed to a certain level of behavior. If I decide that I can't honor that agreement, then I can go away, or break the agreement and reap the consequences.
