Nothing against New Hampshire, but it seems to me there is a better choice for a Free State. Having lived most of my life in Texas and New Mexico (on a windy day I can spit across the border even now), I think Texas makes more sense.

1. NASA is just south of Houston , Texas We will control the space industry.

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the US.

3. Defense Industry - we have over 65% of it. The term " Don' t mess with Texas ," will take on a  whole new meaning.

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years, no need to buy Arab oil. Yankee states? Sorry about that.

5. Natural Gas - again we have all we need and it's too bad about those Northern States. Al Gore will have to figure out a way to keep them warm. ...

6. Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications- - small companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel , AMD, Atmel , Applied Materials, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.

7. Medical Care - We have the largest research centers for cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world , as well as other large health centers. Dallas has some of the best hospitals in the United States.

8. We have enough colleges to keep us going : University of Texas , Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston , Baylor, UNT ( University of North Texas ), Texas Women 's University , etc. Ivy grows better in the South anyway.

9. We have a ready supply of workers. We could just open the border when  we need some more.

10. We have essential control of the plastics industry.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard . We don' t have an Army, but since every body down  here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call the  Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over Chuck Norris and a couple of Texas Rangers.

12. We are totally self- sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs, and most types of grain, fruit and vegetables , and let's not forget seafood from the Gulf.

Of course, we wouldn't have President Obama, but Ron Paul is a Texan, and most of us would prefer him anyhow (we're sending that carpetbagger Bush back to Connecticut). The only thing we wouldn't have is mountains and snow skiing. I never understood snow skiing myself, as it seems all it is good for is getting rid of excess politicians, but there is a simple solution. We will just annex New Mexico. Ya'll would never miss it, and half of Texas spends weekends at our casinos and summers in our mountains, so it is a perfect fit.

Now to the rest of the United States under President Obama : Since you won' t have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Obama will be able to drive around in his big 9 mpg SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes .

You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes , but since Mr.Obama has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas as long as you survive the 2000 years it will take to get enough heat from Global Warming.

Best part about it - winters are so much nicer here.

I see a problem.

RACISM.

PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

23% of people there think Obama is still a Muslim. (Basically, you got a lot of stupid people.)

All huge hurdles.

I think the reason why Texas is a bad idea is because there would be too many counter protesters and news that puts the protesters in a bad light. Civil disobedience is only a form of activism if the local news will pick it up and people in the area support the cause. And Obama is not a Muslim, not that it matters.

The racism I won't argue about. Of course, I haven't been in a state yet that I didn't see some sign of it, and having spent time in the South, Texas has nothing you won't find as bad or worse elsewhere. Have you ever been to Alabama?

Prison Industrial Complex? With Ron Paul as president of the Republic, that would change.

As far as 23% of Texans believing B.O. is Muslim, well, I suspect that falls under the category of 98% of all statistics being made up on the spot to promote an agenda.

Dude, judging the entire state based on your experiences in Ft. Hood, or the ones you met in jail is weak. (The guy with the Texas tattoo on his face was probably an Okie who lost a bet on OU and Texas). You were surrounded by criminals and soldiers - not the best and brightest, or even the average citizen.

Try this. Build your fence around New Hampshire, and around Texas, cut off trade with the US, (which is a good possibility if either were to secede) and see which one lasts longer.

Racism as its formally known today is credited to a Spanish Catholic priest (can't remember his name) and his writings on the justification of slavery. That was how the Catholic Church justified it, and the rest of Europe rolled with it.

Humans are one species made up of several different races. There are biological differences in groups of mankind that make up racial differences, not much differences on the greater scale of things but they do exist. Folk often mistake "race" with "species".

Wrong priest. de las Casas spoke out against Spanish colonialism, the murder of the Tainu and Arawak tribes, and really pissed off the pope.

Read Lies My Teacher Told Me, by James Loewen. It has an excellent chapter on Spains rape of the New World, and covers de las Casas efforts as well.

The stereotype isn't a nigga from Brooklyn, or some liberal tree-hugger from California, it's Texans. Get over it. The world knows Texas sucks.

Well, the world is misinformed.  Texas isn't so bad.  It's not regulated all to hell like the coastal states.  You can buy a gun straight from a gun show and take it home without anybody calling you a nut or a redneck, and if you end up shooting somebody on your property you probably won't get blame for it so long as a reasonable person would conclude that they had broken in, and if you're female the standards are probably even lower.  I don't know a single Texan who voted for George Bush-- ever.  I know they exist, but most people don't seem to think about Bush's track record in Texas as a governor before he became president, which was abysmal.  Austin is a liberal haven wonderland where people can wait tables, get tattooed, and play roller derby for their entire existence.  It's a little like Hotel California in that once you get settled there, it's a really hard time summoning up the will to leave.  Dallas is the land of plenty without paying a lot-- I lived within a few miles of downtown for three years in a nice one bedroom apartment for $550 a month.  Addison has more restaurants per capita than any other city in American, as far as I understand.

Houston is a hell hole in terms of traffic and pollution, but at least it has no zoning laws.  Galveston and Corpus Christi are a cheap beach vacation.  San Antonio is picturesque.  Texarkana has some kickass steak houses.   Plano may be boring, but you can get a nice house in a safe neighborhood without paying through the nose.  Fort Worth has a great zoo and a college town atmosphere.

I'm not going to bother talking about all of the smaller Texas towns I've visited such as Waco, De Soto, Round Rock, and Waxahachie.  And yes, I realize that I say all of this as a white bread, white-skinned, Midwestern girl who fits right in at most of these places.    But really, it's not like Texas is the locus of American ugliness.  Kansas is the home of the school board who tried to re-define science.  Pennsylvania was the home of the most resounding defeat of Intelligent Design in schools.  Colorado was where Mathew Shepard was tied to a fence and beaten to death for being gay.  And Kansas, again, is the home of Fred Phelps and his lovely "God Hates Fags" congregation, as well as the delightful "Summer of Mercy" abortion protests in 1991, which lasted the entire summer and during which an abortion provider was shot in the arm.  And Florida.....don't get me started on Florida.

I'm saying all this mainly because I think that Texas has become a punching bag-- not just for America, but for the entire world.  They think "Hey, George Bush came from there!" and so conclude that it's the most backwards state in the nation.  But in reality, George Bush was born in Connecticut.  And Texas is a HUGE state-- whenever I tell someone from Europe that I'm from Texas, I have to remind them that if you were to drive across Texas from east to west, it would take about 12 hours.  That also gives them a better notion of how big the United States is as a whole, and how ridiculous it is then to make generalizations about what all Americans are like.

Makes a huge difference in a racist society.

The stereotype existed far before Bush and 9/11.

I'm pretty sure he never became governor of Connecticut, and I am pretty sure he never won that state in an election.

Yes, and 6 of those 12 is nothing but empty land and meth labs.

I been a lot of places, and I've never been mistaken for that stereotype. They know who the ugly Americans are, and they sound like...Texans. That accent is very distinct, and it is usually followed with an ignorant statement, so they are easily identifiable.

I can tell you from my experience over seas, that the only preconception most people had about Texas is that we are all cowboys. I have found the same lack of knowledge, to put it politely, on the east coast and midwest.  Most of the people who had problems with Americans had grudges against Washington DC, not Austin. I still think your personal preferences are influencing you.  But, Texas isn't for everybody - thank the Goddess.

Thanks for the heads up on de las Casas, to whomever pointed that out. That will require some more reading.

Nothing against New Hampshire, but it seems to me there is a better choice for a Free State. Having lived most of my life in Texas and New Mexico (on a windy day I can spit across the border even now), I think Texas makes more sense.

I have a good friend that owns a house in Plano and has an AWFUL time with the Plano government being up his ass about everything. They fined him a thousand dollars because he had a pile of wood on his front yard for example.

You can't vote your way to anarchy but you can damn well vote your way to a dramatically reduced state. If voting doesn't matter, how do you explain the fact that NH has no income/sales tax, no seat belt law, etc?

For me, the whole strategy is to get around 30 libertarians in the House. That's enough to have a libertarian veto against just about any bad legislation there is -- swinging it for the R's or the D's depending on which one is less Statist on that particular bill.

Meanwhile, the R's are rapidly becoming "libertarianized". Check the NHLA scores from 2006 to 2008. Check the way they vote.

Yep.

My main reason is I believe there are reasons when force is necessary, foreign and domestic.  Its foolish to believe otherwise.

That makes you not an anarchist.  I'm not sure it makes you not a libertarian.

Of course I do.  My point is that not all Texans are like that by far, and neither is that kind of thing restricted to Texas.  That's all I'm trying to say-- that Texas is the state people always mention, but in reality that crap is all over the states, particularly in the South.

I'll just say that I like living here, and there are few other states that I'd care to live in...and those would be mainly for the geography (Colorado, Hawaii) or politics (New Hampshire).

Then they're not facts, are they?  Unless you have statistics, all you can do is say that some  Texans do these things.  And even if they do, so what? Does that make Texas the epitome of American stupidity?  Hardly.   That prize couldn't even be earned by Florida, Kansas, or Tennessee (though a person could easily add up a list of unpleasant things that many people in those states do), because all of those states contain intelligent people as well.  That's where generalizations get you.  That's why using generalizations without qualification makes you look like a jerk.

Obviously you don't possess any, so its understandable why you would say some dumb shit like that.

Something has to be written in a book for it to be true...wow, you ARE dumb.

It just looks like you are talking out of your ass. If you had something credible to back you up besides your word I might believe you. But that is not the point, I don't care if you talk shit about them. But just STFU about people making generalizations about blacks.

I'm not going to compare dick sizes with you about who has traveled more but I have traveled around the world.

I bet you were an ugly American who they tried to avoid because you walked around thinking you know everything.

Is it written in a book that if you go into a ghetto and start calling people "nigger", that you run the risk of at least getting your ass beat?

Is it written in a book that you shouldn't go to a feminist rally and call the women there "bitches"?

Is it written in a book that I shouldn't go to my mom's neighbors (old Jewish guy with a LOT of shotguns) house with a Nazi armband on if I like not having a gaping hole in my chest?

Dude, just because some shit isn't written, or have a study on it, or some shit like that, doesn't make it any less true.

Oh, and another thing, you like to come wherever I am posting and start shit with me, but you are a bitch, so I can understand why you would stalk me. You probably want to be like me, but your balls haven't dropped yet. It's okay though, and I am flattered. When you hit puberty little boy I will school you on some things.

Known Fact:
Texans like to brag about how big their state is to people from the United States but not from Texas.

Known Fact:
Texans like to say "Well everything is bigger in Texas", and have heard it from their fellow Texans.

Don't get me wrong, there are probably a small percentage who these don't apply to, but they would be outside the norm.

If you haven't realized as an adult that generalizations rule the world and we ALL use them in one form or another condiering we possibly couldn't know everything about everything, then you need to geet outside your house and interact with pople outside this message board.

Actually, as an adult I've learned that you don't use generalizations without qualification unless you are either a) a comedian, or b) an idiot....or c) both.  Yes, a lot of people do use them.  A lot of people in Texas do this, making you ironically much like the people you criticize.

Also: you appear to have some raging hatred against Texas specifically, but when pinned down all you can offer is that Texans like to brag about the size of their state?  Seriously?   Do you have some kind of myopia which prevents you from seeing that ignorance and racism exist all over the country?

Oh, I know racism exists all over. But some places are so bad, so just...horrible, they they single themselves out. Texas is that place. All this debating about it won't change a damn thing about what I am saying. I will continue to think and say that Texas is the worst place I have ever been. The racism, the staggering level of ignorance, the fact that I have never heard or met so many people that have never left their state but know everything about the world, and those that have left break this rule about how to not be an Ugly American.

2. Don't overplay your home town, but if asked, be forthcoming.
Everyone knows someone who won't relent when it comes to their home town, breaking into song at the mere mention of where they live (it's always seemed to me that Alabamans and others from parts South were most likely to launch into song). When asked, volunteer some information, but understand that not the entire world thinks your U.S. state is the center of the planet.

Texans are the only people I have met that think their state is the center of the planet. New Yorkers hae that "greatest city" mentality, but it is earned because of the multitude of diverse cultures within it, and serves as a archetype for what the rest of the world hopefully looks like by 2100 as long as the damn governments and religions of the world fade into nothingness.

I dislike the South in general, but its Texas I dislike the most. It's like everything I hate about the South magnified times 10.

Okay, I'm not going to discount any of what you just said, but I'm going to suggest something-- perhaps, just perhaps, what you're talking about is not so much "known facts" as "Sincere's fervently held and not necessarily unjustified impressions of the state."

I've never been to New York, and honestly don't care to-- one reason for that, actually, is that I know there are loads of people on both coasts who think it's okay to shit on Texas as being full of culturally inept morons.   One of my favorite things to do when I lived in England was to get into an extended discussion with someone new about philosophy and psychology with my newscaster-vague Midwestern accent and then-- surprise!-- reveal to them that I'm from Texas and own a gun.  It forces them to broaden their horizons, amend their generalizations.   If I had announced that I was from Louisiana or Florida they might  have started with similar prejudices, but not nearly so much as hearing that I'm from Texas.   That's because Texas, by virtue of being seen as the state of Dubya, has become the emblem of American stupidity.  I'm just saying that this thinking is off.   It's unfair-- which is not to say that there aren't loads of ignorant hateful ingrates in Texas, but it obscures the fact that they exist all over the U.S. as well.

So first you say that more people than myself hold a certain view on Texas, then you say its just only me that holds that view...what???

SO you are making a generalization as to why you don't want to go somewhere because of something you can't verify because YOU have never been there?

How does that pedestal look from the bottom now that I have knocked you off it?

Also if a whole bunch of people that don't know each other have all come to the same conclusion about a place, it's probably true.

If you ask a bunch of your friends that don't know each other about a particular restaurant and they all say it sucks, then you probably aren't going to go, because you trust their opinion. It's not something concrete or written in a book, its an opinion, but when another person asks you about said restaurant, you are going to say it sucks, and that person will take it as fact, especially when you say yeah, a bunch of people told me that.

Not trying to say that when multiple people have the same opinion, it becomes fact, but just because something isn't a "fact" doesn't make it any less true.

Your problem is social strata.

I didn't hang out with people from the military, and the ones I did were:

Trey: A black dude from Texas. Did not fit the stereotype in the negative ways.

Scott - White dude from Boise, Idaho.

Kim - black chick from Port Arthur, Texas. Kinda fit the stereotype, but the more she hung out with me  and my other friend Sincere she became more open to different views.

Nyasulu - black dude from Africa.

Sincere - black dude from New York.

Matt - white dude from Arkansas.

That's it for the military. Most of the people I hung out with were from other states that moved to Texas for various reasons. There were a few Texan friends, but they were also exceptions, but they were a very small percentage outside of the everyday Texan I would meet, which would fit the stereotype to a T. There are other reasons why I don't like Texas, but those you wouldn't understand.

So first you say that more people than myself hold a certain view on Texas, then you say its just only me that holds that view...what?

No, I said nothing of the sort.  I specifically acknowledged in the very post you quoted that there are plenty of people who hold your view.

SO you are making a generalization as to why you don't want to go somewhere because of something you can't verify because YOU have never been there?

Generalization: a statement that implies that all members of a group are the same.

I made no generalization.  If you'll go back and look, I said that "there are loads of people on both coasts who think...."  I did not say "people on both coasts think....."  The latter is a generalization; the former is not.

When I said "fact" , I meant in the scientific verification sense,, where people are doing test and experiments and double blind studies and shit. But there are a lot of facts that are not written anywhere, nor studied, and the only verification is the personal experiences of others, yet that doesn't make them any less true than objective facts like how big the earth is or how many days there are in a year.

And when you come and try to tell someone that their opinion is wrong, because of your own opinion, I don't have to be civil because of the sheer retardedness of that logic.

You know that the things you've been asserting about Texas can be tested scientifically, right?  And if they're tested and not found to be true, then they're.....not true.  In any sense of the word.

You're still not grasping what I said.  I never said that your opinion of Texas is wrong-- I said that the claims to fact that you've been making about Texas are wrong.  You can feel however you want about the state, but it's still false that all Texans fit the description that you've been giving.  That's why I have encouraged you not to make generalizations.  Opinions are not a matter of truth; they are matter of preference.  I don't give a damn if you like Texas or not, but I'll be happy to tell you you're wrong when you say things that are outright false.

You guys REALLY need to stop trying to talk around the point that I have made and come into the real world where things are what they are, and opinion DOES matter. Just because it ONE situation something is not true, does NOT invalidate the whole claim.

Perfect example is the theory of relativity. They found out that it doesn't apply to anything on a sub-atomic scale. Does that invalidate the whole theory? No. It just means it applies to everything bigger than an atom. But by your logic, the entire claim is invalid because in certain circumstances it doesn't apply.

And you wouldn't be arguing with me about my opinion if you didn't think it was wrong, which is what originally started this. I stated an opinion, and everyone wanted to beef with me about it.

All of you disagreeing with me sound like the type of people Nas is referring to in this line:
"Cause anytime we mention our condition, our history or existence/They callin it reverse racism"

Not that specific situation, but that anytime someone makes a claim contrary to your understanding, they must be wrong.

Sandy: (Sandy ropes Patrick and brings him into the background)
Patrick: Ahh! SpongeBob! (explosion is heard. SpongeBob screams. SpongeBob stops in front of a leaf and Sandy karate chops the leaf and SpongeBob in half)
Sandy: Hi-yah! Y'all better take back what ya said!

Funny how out of 50 different states to do this to, they chose Texas...hmmm....

There were a few Texan friends, but they were also exceptions, but they were a very small percentage outside of the everyday Texan I would meet, which would fit the stereotype to a T.

Where'd you meet these people?

No big long stories, no names or examples.  Just...  Where?

Poetry group at a African-American bookstore.

Okay.  And where'd you meet the Texan assholes?

You guys REALLY need to stop trying to talk around the point that I have made and come into the real world where things are what they are, and opinion DOES matter. Just because it ONE situation something is not true, does NOT invalidate the whole claim.

You REALLY need to grasp the fact that I haven't been saying otherwise.

And you wouldn't be arguing with me about my opinion if you didn't think it was wrong, which is what originally started this. I stated an opinion, and everyone wanted to beef with me about it.

I don't share your opinion.  That doesn't mean it's wrong, any more than my not liking spaghetti means that people who dislike spaghetti are wrong.  What I disagree with is the fact that you've been claiming your opinion as fact, when it is patently not.  The difference is really not that difficult to grasp.

And since it's not that difficult, this is the last time I'm going to clarify it for you.  I have better things to do.

Nothing against New Hampshire, but it seems to me there is a better choice for a Free State. Having lived most of my life in Texas and New Mexico (on a windy day I can spit across the border even now), I think Texas makes more sense.

You forgot the most important factor.

Made a big pot of posole last weekend. Pretty tasty, but I too am craving some asado. I'll probably make some in the next week or two.

Small nitpick: "New Hampshirewomen"?  It sounds like like women who just arrived in Hampshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampshire), England.  Either go all the way with "Newhampshirewomen", no spaces, or use normal words, like "New Hampshire women".  So, I started a poll about this (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=26990.0), and so far everyone seems to prefer the latter.
