Deleting Lame Accounts
« on: November 19, 2008, 09:29:07 PM »

That's a lot of new fucking members...
I smell bacon.

Just look at some of the names and the way they're spelled.

I mean, 'wetgirl'? 'Slaveuprising'?

Are these not the most cop-sounding names you've ever heard?

Food for thought:

  • Out of 2851 active accounts that existed as of five days ago, 1061 had zero posts.

  • The average registrations per day stand at 3.1 over the life of this BBS, and it was close to that until recently, but over the last five days this number was ~25 - a huge, sustained, and on-going leap!

  • Having thousands of inactive accounts (and at this rate we'll reach 10,000 zero-post ones in just under one year from now, and the rate might even accelerate) might seem trivial, but it does have some consequences.  (And not just for any script that loops through all of them every day or two, ahem...)  For one thing, Advanced Search by user-name becomes slower.  Alias squatting leaves fewer choices for active users, and can cause confusion.  Etc.

I think people who sign up and then not post, not even once, should be deleted after a week (or maybe a month).

You make up for it by deleting yours twice a month.

Accounts were being deleted after a year of inactivity, but I think Ian stopped doing it for some reason.

Can you delete accounts that weren't logged in to after a certain amount of time?

Yes, because we can delete whatever we want.

I think there's little value and a potential down-side to deleting accounts without taking their past activity into consideration.  "Lame" accounts (zero posts) are what's clogging up the system.  On the other hand, if someone was an active user and then left for a year or two, deleting his account would only discourage his / her potential return.

I could be mistaken, but I think we'd have to go through and check manually.

From the backend, one can even delete everyone who has an odd number of vowels in his / her e-mail address, so this shouldn't be a discussion of what CAN be done, but rather what SHOULD.

Perhaps I SHOULD make people's posts disappear when they delete their accounts.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I pinky-swear to be a good little boy from now on!

Just don't touch my beautiful retro posts!

Heck, if I had access to the backend, I'd reassign them all onto my current user ID.

Can you do that, error?

(Lindsey clearly can't.)

And change other account attributes, i.e. date registered in 2006.

And change my status back to AMP (my average is still around $40/month, and I'll resume my three-digit AMP'age... someday...)

And give me stars.

Lots of stars.

Purty ones!!!
