Title: Deleting Lame Accounts
Post by: Alex Libman on November 19, 2008, 09:29:07 PM
That's a lot of new fucking members...
I smell bacon.

Just look at some of the names and the way they're spelled.

I mean, 'wetgirl'? 'Slaveuprising'?

Are these not the most cop-sounding names you've ever heard?

Food for thought:

I think people who sign up and then not post, not even once, should be deleted after a week (or maybe a month).

You make up for it by deleting yours twice a month.

Accounts were being deleted after a year of inactivity, but I think Ian stopped doing it for some reason.

Can you delete accounts that weren't logged in to after a certain amount of time?

Yes, because we can delete whatever we want.

I think there's little value and a potential down-side to deleting accounts without taking their past activity into consideration.  "Lame" accounts (zero posts) are what's clogging up the system.  On the other hand, if someone was an active user and then left for a year or two, deleting his account would only discourage his / her potential return.

I could be mistaken, but I think we'd have to go through and check manually.

From the backend, one can even delete everyone who has an odd number of vowels in his / her e-mail address, so this shouldn't be a discussion of what CAN be done, but rather what SHOULD.

Perhaps I SHOULD make people's posts disappear when they delete their accounts.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I pinky-swear to be a good little boy from now on!

Just don't touch my beautiful retro posts!

Heck, if I had access to the backend, I'd reassign them all onto my current user ID.

Can you do that, error?

(Lindsey clearly can't. (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=23981))

And change other account attributes, i.e. date registered in 2006.

And change my status back to AMP (my average is still around $40/month, and I'll resume my three-digit AMP'age... someday...)

And give me stars.

Lots of stars.

Purty ones!!!

Well, I'd be very grateful.  I had several accounts called "Alex Libman", "AlexLibman" (no space - the first one), "Phant", and possibly "Phantgeist".

Too bad I'm completely without digitally-transferable assets at the moment (tax resistance ain't easy), but as soon as I can move money around - I'm totally gonna remember the Homeland Stupidity support page (http://www.homelandstupidity.us/support/)...  ;)

Anywho, back to the topic at hand.

Are you trying to bribe me? I suggest you AMP the show instead.

Anywho, back to the topic at hand.

OK, well, I could leave your posts and just delete your account instead. That's always an option. :P

It means (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NO_CARRIER) error's mom picked up the phone.

Anywhoo, looks like most people misunderstood that there are separate questions in the poll, but we can assume that not answering one of the questions indicates indifference.  So out of 7 who voted thus-far, 2 want to delete them after a month, and 5 don't care either way.

Nah, the poll is just a side-show anyways - this ain't no democracy here.  But it looks like there's an emerging consensus that deleting zero-post accounts after a couple weeks of inactivity is a good idea.  If done right (i.e. an automated warning e-mail three days before deletion), it can actually increase newbie activity.

None have posted thus-far.  I agree that some people take a while to start posting, but it's weird that such a large fraction of new users are like that.  Combined with the recent spike in registrations - something is weird.

(When I'll have the time, I'll tweak the script and smooth-graph registrations-per-day over time, and maybe also a time-to-first-post average.)

It's all Hansen anyway. Everyone is Hansen.

Is that authoritative (i.e. based on them coming from similar IP / hostname patterns or from known proxies)?

My top wild guess was that it's an "inside job" by the #1 nick-hopper rancemuhamitz (currently aka "Rancid Panocha (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?action=profile;u=587)") looking for ways to screw with me.  Acting very weird lately, including deleting all posts...

Oh, you're missing 99% of the drama.  Once I hired two separate hitmen to watch this BBS and kill me if I ever came back, setting it up so that I can't pay them not to kill me if I did.  They're both dead now.

I hypothesize that they are all lurking and waiting for intelligent threads to jump in on but find only threads about cat eating and obsessiveness about gathering statistics about thread posters.

It doesn't matter exactly how long accounts without posts are given before deletion, all that really matters is that there's a rule about it. A rule that's strictly enforced, preferably by a script. Because the reason this BBS is so shitty is the lack of rules.

No, in regards to everything. Everything must have a rule regarding it. Not a guideline or suggestion, but a rule. All rules must be strictly enforced by scripts (that is a rule). If it were not for the rules, this BBS would delve into anarchy, and before you know it we'd all be smoking pot.
