Funnily, I just dream whenever I want to, the rest of the time I just let the brain go on autopilot with dreams. When I want to take over, I just do, I can't explain why, but I can. Then there's my 'problem solving' dreams, when I'm either working on a complex program or a problematic logic proof, I just enter a dream when I go to sleep to solve the problem. I remember the solution even hours later and just write it down.
