I've actually ridden a camel once, and horses a few times.

The camel wasn't that comfortable, nor was it exactly uncomfortable.  I didn't get to ride it very far though, just a mile or so.  It seemed like it could be pretty decent though if rigged out properly.

With dogs pulling you you can stand or sit on a seat! Drink holders anyone?

With an ideal saddle, a camel is more comfortable than a horse.  (Unless the horse saddle is a camel-like hump on which you can sit and position your legs naturally.)  Of course nothing beats an elephant - you could fit a friggin' mattress on one.

Dog sleds are designed to be ultra-light and to slide well.  For this journey you'd need something like a cart with wheels.  Most famous sledders were very skinny, had many dogs, and carried little to no cargo.  Dogs need to eat and rest after ~30 miles.  Riding on snow in the wilderness is one thing, but can you imagine riding a dog cart down Main Street?  My prediction: your head through the Pet Store window!

Still sounds like more fun than a camel.

You want fun, bring an iPhone.  You want an animal that will go anywhere, eat anything, and go for weeks without food and water - camel is your best bet.

And if you your iPhone runs out of juice...

(That's a refrigerator under there.  And solar panels are getting better and lighter every year.)

There is a reason why horses have been so very popular throughout history.

However, you will not get me up on one of the big, dumb beasts.

The relative phrase "big dumb beasts" should be reserved for politicians on this forum.  By using it to describe useful domesticated animals, you inadvertently bring benefit to the real dumb beasts out there.  Domesticated animals were bred and proliferated by man for his usefulness.  No animal ever forced a human being to feed it or take care of it against the man's will!  Only government bureaucrats are that beastly.  :x
