Title: AMP Pays for Ian and Mark's Vacation

Nice hotel suites, all expenses paid by AMPlifiers!  They talk about it several times each podcast!

Go ahead Mark and Ian--enjoy!

I hope you are not being serious.  There is nothing vacationy about going to a radio conference.

I am aware of FTL advertisers that have offered these guys all-expenses-paid vacations on a couple of occasions, and they have not accepted. There is no reason to suggest that they would be using AMP dollars for their own entertainment purposes, when they are turning down entertainment offers from other individuals.

I voted Yes, not because it's a fun vacation but because there's a diversion of I&M's career interests and my AMP'ing interests.

Yes, getting I&M to rub elbows with the big boys of Big Old Radio helps the show, but it helps their careers more.  It's nice to have all basis covered, but grandmas who only listen to analog radio are not likely FSP recruits!  If the same money was spent on Google keyword advertising, the effect would be more to my liking.

BTW, this opinion has nothing to do with my upcoming AMP reduction from $100/month to $5/month.  All Ron Paul and too little work make Alex a broke boy.  I expect to restore my original commitment in a couple of months.

I do have some awareness of where the AMP money goes, so I'll fill in a few details for those of you who are apparently jealous that you aren't going to NYC.

Ian and Mark have been going to two radio conferences a year almost as long as the show has been on the air. As they say on the radio, these conferences are important because program directors from big markets come to them, and FTL is perceived as a more serious show when (1) they've been on the air a while, and (2) the hosts show up at these conferences. Several stations have come on board as a direct result of Ian and Mark going to these things.

New York City is a shithole. Sure, it's been painted over in a few places, most notably midtown Manhattan, but it's still a complete shithole underneath. It's frankly not worth going to. It has an authoritarian government, nearly the most complete and deadly gun ban in the country, and cops who will shoot you for fun and get away with it while letting the hardened criminals roam free. It's worse than Boston in those respects.

Anyone have any good NYC stories? I'll start with two, both of which involve semen.

So I'm on this subway late at night. The only other people in the car are this young, nicely-dressed couple and an old, homeless-looking dude sitting across from them. This dude is just staring at this chick for several minutes, and she is getting a little freaked out. At some point, the homeless whips out his cock and starts jacking it. The young dude gets up and just starts kicking the crap out of this dude and the three of us, not the homeless, get off at the next stop.

Another time, I am riding an elevator. The elevator stops and this dude gets on. A few seconds later, this dude says, "Ohhhhh, shiiit." I look over and this dude has this just sickened look on his face looking at the floor. I scan my eyes down and this dude is barefoot. He lifts his foot up and underneath is this little pile of creamy load.

I agree.

(I'll be amping again when I feel like it.  My current card's expiring in a month, I'm not doing it twice.  I freely admit I haven't listened in months and that doesn't have a thing to do with amping.  These guys are out there doing their thing, its worth a few bucks from me regardless of my listening habits.  They're cool people doing a cool thing and that is the extent of my reasoning on that.  Plus I like this forum and it's not free to keep in operation.)

I've probably said this about five times, theres nothing wrong with them using their donations to do a remote podcast from a different city.  They could bang one out in two hours sitting in a hotel somewhere, all perfectly resonable to me.  They gotta eat, and have a place to stay.  Few months back I offered the opinion that AMP money could have been used to make the NH move, and I hope you did pad the expense with the AMP money, even if you wont admit it, I got no problem with that.

Oh, and NYC rocks.

We were driving through NYC on the road trip, and I had the camera pointed outside my window, and took a picture of a souped up hummer. Jay yelled at me.

When I was in fourth or fifth grade, we took a bus trip to NYC for school, for forgotton reasons.

I remember telling the kids on the bus about hookers, and explained they were nice looking women who are looking for boyfriends on the sidewalk.  So, as we pulled up at Rockefeller to get dropped off with our chaperones, we're all hanging out the windows taking pictures of "hookers" pointing and laughing at basically every woman on the sidewalk exclaiming "Theres one!  A hooker !  A hooker!"

Considering that the show itself would go nowhere if they didn't attend these conferences and engage in similar activities, I hardly think you could consider this a "vacation".  It's a business trip.  There are many jobs that require travel and this is one of them.

My only NYC story is pretty lame.  I was there both times to do a performance in Carnegie Hall.  I walked through a crowd of pot smoke with my chaperone, and she said "What's that smell?"  The fun part was having to explain it.

I loved being there.  There were people, places to go, things to see.  It's not like here...where everyone is 80 and has a cane or a walker.  Plus, I love performances and shows, so not having to drive hours and hours to see something was cool, and most everything needed is within walking distance (in Manhattan, at least).  If I could ever afford it, I'd move somewhere outside of Manhattan, and just go to the clusterfuck when I wanted to.

There's always somebody who thinks that where they live is a shithole.  There are lots of people who think major metropolis-type cities are shitholes.  Everybody has different tastes.  Personally, if I'm going to pay out the ass for living expenses, I'd like to live somewhere I think is cool.  Not somewhere that my peers think I should.  Fuck that.

it was right next to the Brooklyn Bridge, and at night I would climb the cables to the top of this:

I came down on an outter cable once, and had to cross one of these things to get back to the inner part of the bridge:

I went to NYC in December... bought a car and drove it back to Kansas.

I will never ever go back to Brooklyn if I have anything to say about it. Half the roads had little to no lane markings, three lanes wide, with people driving like shit everywhere! People double parked on BUSY streets. Half the roads are like a damn Baja race. You know, we have some the best roads I've ever driven on, here in Wichita KS, so I never thought about it much, but anyone who argues against private roads -- just sent them to Brooklyn. Holy crap.

The craziest thing was staying at a Days Inn (for $150, and it was the cheapest I could find!) in what I THOUGHT was a ghetto (south side of Brooklyn)... really trashy and run down buildings. However I noticed all the cars were $50k+ in value... odd dichotomy.

The Brooklyn Bridge at about 11AM was fun... its like what, 6 lanes wide, and you get to the tollbooths and theres like 24 counting both sides of the bridge, total pandemonium... and you have to pay $10 just to experience it. I'm REALLY suprised I made it to Pennsylvania without making a wrong turn even once.

Now, PA on the other hand was awesome. The main east/west interstate (forget what it is now... 80?) is very scenic and never hits a major city!

For various reasons, it makes sense for us to stay at the hotel where the convention is taking place.  It should be noted, that this time the convention cost us less than last year because we did not have to fly.

My career?  If you think I'm going to allow some radio bigwig to buy me out, you don't know me very well.

It's not in Newark, it's right across the street from the Holland Tunnel. The area is right next to a big shopping mall, so it's pretty decent. It's not like it's in the middle of the ghetto.

Whether it is a good idea or not, Ian is never going to allow FTL to be bought by some big media company. BELIEVE me when I say this. I would like nothing better than to get some big contract and split a huge signing bonus, but Ian WILL NOT be controlled by an overbearing Program Director.

Secondly, in response to the general thread, If anyone thinks I consider sleeping in the same bed as Ian anything but a sacrifice for FTL, they are sadly mistaken.
