I've heard alot of speculation about the American Union, but not alot of substance. It seems the natural tendency of government to want to form as expansive power networks as possible, the EU seems to be a perfect blueprint of what could happen in America, however, I don't really have the time to pay attention to all the political and cultural goings on of all the American nations, so as far as I can tell it might never happen, or it might be about to kick in next year, from all the hype I've heard I've no idea what to believe.
Cutting short, what do you think of the likelyhood of the American Union forming, and when do you see it happening.
Any other general thoughts welcome.

As I see it, there are only two possibilities. Either the entire world will eventually fall under a single, global state (whose inevitable downfall constitutes an historical event horizon), or the trend toward centralization will reverse itself until the world is largely stateless. I am not optimistic about the possibility of the latter, so I believe that there will be a world government, and an American Union is a logical step in that process.
The union will be shortly preceded by the collapse of the American dollar, which I think will happen within the next generation. So my prediction is that the AU will be formed within the next 20 years.

already happened maybe?

Is this when Damien Thorn finally takes over the world to make way for Hell on Earth?

I don't think we'll get a new overarching Constitution and State, but it will probably be more along the lines of neoliberalism and massive deeply concreted free trade agreements. I mean like an expansion of NAFTA and CAFTA into some sort of mega free trade zone. The US populace will never go for an outright abolition of the Constitution (even though they don't seem to mind destroying it one amendment at a time) or an outright loss of sovereignty and I don't think that American politicians will ever want to give up their power to some new boss, they'll want to control the union instead.

Ain't gonna happen. Such a move would essentially be an annexation of Canada and Mexico. Canadians have no desire to get sucked into the United States. And, even though many Mexicans might want to live here, most are just as loyal to their country as Norte Americanos are to theirs.

But what they think doesn't matter, because it is in their governments' interests to form a larger political bloc.

I'm inclined to believe we'd be far more likely to see something like NATO + NAFTA combined instead of a new overarching State. The politicians don't want to cede their power any more than we want a bigger government.
