Argumentum ad populum is a logical fallacy, but we are talking about the subjective marketplace here.  The purpose of a product is to sell well, thus Microsoft products are successful.  A competitor is free to enter the global marketplace at any time to offer better software - many have tried and failed.

Ask Steve Jobs if he thinks the purpose of the product is to sell well.

I don't know Steve Jobs.

Nor use any of his software products.

Nor do any of my friends / coworkers...

That's obvious.

Voted Google, Microsoft, Target in that order.
Google - Do No Evil is their motto, plus they are overall and amazing company.
Microsoft - They have affected my life in so many great ways with their amazing product.
Target - Um, I like their clothing and prices. Yep.
Apple - I cannot stand them or their fanboys. Product=sucktacular   Handling of the greatest band evah (Beatles)= also sucktacular
I dont drink coffee so Starbucks is bleh.
The rest I either know nothing about or just am neutral about.

"Do No Evil" may be Google's motto, but they're in bed with the government, more so than is publicly known.  Plus they're centralizing the Internet, squashing better technologies like open source search, P2P video streaming, etc in the process.  They are a publicly traded company, and their revenue model depends on taking away your right to block their ads / tracking code, etc.  Sooner or later, Evil will emerge.

I agree with that last sentence, but they are being watched so closely that I'm crossing my fingers and (gasp) hoping they do more good before falling to bad actions.
